how do you do it?
with blues i usually grab them from the top of the head and squeeze
with bass i ususally try to lip them, but i have lost a few fish doing this and i am sure there is a better way, what works best for you?

I do the same as you, only with the blues I grab them under the gills.
You could try one of those Boga grip thingys but I think you could probably loose a few like that to.
The other way is to play the fish longer until there is no fight left making it better but then the chanses of the fish making it back alive will be far less.
I think just look at it as catch and release with less stress if you loose a few. :brow

Berkley lip gripper.Got it at Galyans for like $25. I learned the hard way with a 2/0 clouser through my thumb compliments of a 26" striper. (#$119) Lefty

My usual method on stripers is a thumb in mouth grab, drop it and grab again hoping it doesn't come off. Blues I take a pair of large hemostats or pliers and remove the fly in the water. I have picked up too many blues and have them flop and drop into my lap. I don't care for having a vasectomy done by Dr. Blue sans anesthetic or otherwise. Of course this is problematic if using hardware and treble hooks. Your on your own with those.

I use the Berkley Lip Grabber as well. I paid 28 bucks for it at wal-mart. The Shimano Pliers titanium coated, that I bought earlier this year for 18 bucks, has lasted all season.

If you are really good you can knock the jig right out of their mouth!
I find that the spray skirt gives me an easy place to slide them on to. I am in the "no tools"club. Use that thumb, the wounds from a nights fishing usually heal in a few days...

I am in the "no tools"club.
Same here. Grab em, tail them, or lip them. I don't even like pliers.
