How does one prevent the blues from steraling flies when you're targeting stripers with 15lb fluorocarbon leaders? Should I switch to 40lb shock tippet or use a flexible wire leader? I like catching blues when I know I will get my fly back. But I am more interested in catching the stripes.

Thanks.

bugger- I've been using the flexible steel leader on the flies I'm throwing now ecause there are so many blues around and the stripers don't seem to mind when I can get the flies down passed the blues. I've tried using heavy mono bite tippet but then you have to retie after each blue if you get the fly back. Even 50# is cut by the 4-6# blues quite easily. Ron

How long of a wire leader do you use?

I generally try and keep the leader between 4 and 6". The blues don't as a rule get a chance to swallow the fly like stripers do at times, but even the ones that do inhale the fly rarely knick the mono tippet even with just 4" of wire. Ron

The blues --123-3 are sharpening their teeth at night while we sleep. I had them going through braided wire.
A 40# fluro shock worked in the past but now..... break out the single strand shark wire

American Fishing Wire makes a good product called surflon micro ultra. Simply albright 4" onto a 20# mono leader and you should be in business. Figure 8 knot works best with this stuff.
