Greetings from Colorado from a soul who wishes he was on boat enjoying the blitz. Unfortunately life will not allow me to make the trip this year. Please have a look at the info below about an upcoming event I for which hope you would like to participate.

In August of this year, we found out our one year old son has an extremely rare genetic brain disorder called Canavan's disease. It is a horrible disease that causes the white matter of the brain to be destroyed. Vincent will never walk or talk and will be severely disabled. He will likely not see his 10th birthday and some of these kids die even sooner.

Luckily, relatively speaking, our son is a very functional Canavan kid so far. We have been spared a great deal of the sleeping and eating problems that most of these kids have and he has not had any seizures yet. He is actually a very happy and responsive kid right now and he really just resembles a gigantic newborn.

Although there is no cure for this disease, there is a highly experimental gene therapy trial going on in Camden NJ that provides some hope in adding significant quality of life for him. Also, the work being done in this trial could be revolutionary in the treatment of all kinds of brain disorders including Parkinson's, MS and Alzheimer’s.

Much of the $300k cost for Vinny is covered through an NIH grant, but a considerable portion of the costs ($20k+) is not covered and must be paid for through fundraising efforts.

So here I am, I have no idea how to raise money for such a purpose. I figured I would start with something I do claim to know a thing or two about. A couple of weeks ago, I posted to the FlyFisherman.com RM board to try and get some ideas on what might be an effective fundraiser involving fly fishing. I got an amazing response with dozens of folks volunteering themselves to help.

I come to this group asking for your support in our benefit fly swap. More info can be found here: http://home.comcast.net/~kkbward1/fly_tying_benefit.htm
(please excuse my very rough web-site, please have a look around though)
But the overall concept is to ask folks to donate a dozen hand-tied freshwater flies (or a half dozen salt patterns) and then we will offer packages that will be sent out to folks who donate at least $20 to help with medical expenses for my son. We will send 12 fresh and 6 salt patterns to anyone who sends in at least $20. Please have look at the site for details.

Please let me know if you would be interested in joining us. I think it is going to be a lot of fun and a great way to raise money. Thank you very much for reading!!!!

I'll be tying for another swap that comes off about a week earlier, so what's an extra dozen or so. I'll be sending you an e-mail this weekend with the pattern.

The response has been great so far with well over 500 fresh and salt patterns scheduled to come in. The deadline for fly donations is 11/15, so there is plenty of time left for folks to participate. I am hoping to reach a 1000 flies, that would be something. Here is the info I have been sending folks via email:

Thank you for your interest in the fly swap/donation benefit for my son. Here are the details to participate in the swap either as a fly donor (to tie for us) or as a cash donor (we send flies to you).

How to donate flies for the swap:

1. Choose which region best fits for the flies you would like to tie. These regions are:

-West Trout

-East Trout

-NE Salt

-SE Salt

2. Determine which patterns you would like to tie. We are trying to focus on patterns that are not readily available that are your personal creations or favorites. We are not looking for you to give up any 'secret' flies, we are just hoping that the flies we offer for purchase will be unique.

3. Tie at least one dozen trout patterns or 1/2 dozen saltwater patterns. Please feel free to tie more than the minimum. The flies should be sent to Brian Warden no later than 11/15/04, but, of course, the sooner the better.

4. Send your flies in a protective container to:

Brian Warden
226 Elm Street
Windsor, CO 80550

5. Note that if you would like to provide an extra donation by packaging your donation in a new fly box, your donation will be passed on to a cash donor.

How to purchase flies:

1. Anyone who sends in at least a $20 donation will receive one dozen trout flies or 1/2 dozen saltwater patterns. Please select one of the regions you would prefer to receive as well as a second choice.

2. Please make out your check or money order to: Vincent's Hope c/o Union Colony Bank and send directly to Brian Warden. It is not required, but an email follow up would be helpful for our records.

3. We ask that although we are encouraging people to send in more than $20 if they can, we can only offer either 12 or 6 flies in return. This is to be fair to everyone who requests flies.

4. We expect to begin shipping on the 15th of November, but we have quite an organizational task ahead of us to put all the flies together in packages, so expect 2 to 4 weeks before you get your flies.

5. We will send samples of as many tiers as possible in your dozen flies, with as few duplicates as possible. If you have a request for a special batch (all dries, streamers...etc), please indicate and we will do the best we can, but no guarantees.

How to get more info:

If you would like to know more about our family, Canavan's Disease and how funds will be used (plus some pretty nice fishing photos for you guys), please visit our simple web site at http://home.comcast.net/~kkbward1/

Also, please do not hesitiate to contact me directly.

Thank you again for your interest,

Brian

So my sincere thanks to everyone who donated flies! I got a really good response so I am offering a full dozen for a minimum $25 donation. Each dozen is packaged in a Plano plastic box.

I can offer these to the first 8 people who send me email at kkbward1@comcast.net and then I will need to get a check within a week or so or I will go to some alternates. These are really nice flies and a really good cause (OK, so I am biased).

Thanks everyone!

Brian
