Hey Guys
I Was Just Reading An Article In The Latest Bob Marriotts Catalogue About Potsy Hubbard Who Yadayadayada... Enter A Contest In Which He Had To Choose Just One Fly For The Whole Day And He Couldn't Loose It Or He Would Be Out Of Contest, Says He Choose A Humpy.... Plus The Explanation Of A Super Strong Knot, hardened With Epoxy, Which Is Something That I Still Cant Understand, (isnt Elasticity The Best Guarantee For Strength?) That Ended Finally While False Casting, On The Trigger Of A Gun And Yadayada... A Funny Story Anyway.
That Whole Thing Made Me Think Which Flies Would I Choose If Such Was The Situation. Obviously You Choose But Then You Think Of Another And On And On. So I Divided The Thing:
-if Its For Fresh Water Pursuing Trouts I'll Take A #12 Brown N Olive Bugger.
-for Warm Fresh Water I'll Take A #1/0 Black Red Eyed Half And Half.
-for Salt Water Inshore Pursuing Any Specie ( A Hard One) I'll Take A # 1 Bendback White And Brown, Though I Can Have A Hard Time With Tarpons And Maybe No Bonefish.
-and For Salt Water Off Shore A #3/0 Chartreusse/white Deceiver.
And I Am Still Not Happy With My Elections.
What Flies Would You Guys Choose? For Those 4 Alternatives???
All Theres Is To A Healthy Mind Is Fishing Fishing And Fishing..
Bye
The saltwater fly fishing club I belong to is haveing a similar contest this fall.Anyone who wanted to participate had to tie a fly of there choice. Then all the entries were put in a hat and everone got a fly back (not there own). The person with the most fish cought over the fall season aprox. 4 mos. wins also the tier wins. The hardest part is that you must have the fly at the end of the contest or your out. So far we are about a month in and is't been alot of fun.

ARMANDO, im shore you will get more resoponces, this is also done at the Marthars Vinyard fly fishing durby every June, as for the knots lots of guys use to use PLYBOND, now it off the market, so guys use ZAP-A-GAP.if you tie the knot correctly you don't need GLUE. (insurance) I guess.
GOOD LUCK GOOSD FISHIN --127-3-

Without a doubt it would be a white parakeet tied to the size of the species we were pursuing.

If I could only have one fly, to fish anywhere in the world with it would definately be a chartreuce over white clouser . Everything eats this fly, I have caught everything from rainbows to bonefish on this fly. In saltwater nothing beats this, and wherever I go I always have an entire flat of a box dedicated to this fly in sizes from 2-2/0. Great fly, dirt simple to tie, and works like a charm!

Trout... Peacock soft hackle
Warm water..... Popper... it's more fun on top!

Those contests must be something, the one choosing someone elses fly sounds pretty interesting.
Maybe having just one fly fishing is going to get harder but better, sometimes having too many flies and little or none strikes makes you loose time instead of focusing on presentation with just one pattern.

Yup, gotta agree with this choice! I also like white deceivers in the same size range.

Now here's food for though; is a Clouser really a jig or a true fly.

clousers aren't flies. Best thing to do is stop using them and immediately send them to me :brow

This has been brought up in many a conversation with my fly fishing compadres. When such a debate occurs, I call them "fligs".
Works for me... ;)

Gotta go with the chart/white clouser 3-4" long tied on a 1/0.......if your gonna outlaw that than 4" white deciever also tied on a 1/0 hook, fly has caught everything from 12" schoolies to 45# sbft and best of all its a simple tie.

Seems Like Deceivers Are More Popular Than Half N' Halfs Or Those Amazing Not Jigs But Look Like Jigs And Work Like Jigs, Clousers.
So Yeah A Minnow Pattern Would Be Better Always, Including The No Jig Fly.

Mike Croft has won several one-fly contests with the Chernobyl Ant, which if I remember correctly is just black foam and rubber legs.

Oh yeah you are right, ants sometimes save a fishing day. Funny not my favorite pattern and never something you see flying around here in Bogotá, you see them in warmer places, anyway when no trouts are bitting and I've already used micro midge patterns with no results a #16-18 ant black or better red butt will score (that if I remember).
Thanks for that one, I forgot ants.
