As the title says I am planning for a trip to Baja. This will be my first trip there. My big interest is lite tackle and flyrod fair. Big game is OK, but it is not my primary interest. I may also take a day or two not to fish and just check out the area. My target window is early to mid March.
I have done a Yahoo search and I'll purchase some fishing/ sportsman's magazines but there is no real clue on the reputation of the outfits that I found. I'm from New England so I am not familiar with the area.
Anyone have a good suggestion as to what location on the Baja is a good choice? What kind of fish can I expect to see? Just looking for a good starting point.
Thanks

baja is a great spot. I was there in June last year and had so much fun I went back again in July. I started off Beach fishing in Los Cabos but the surf hits to beach so hard its the beach so hard it is impossible to get a fly out. I did take a guided trip with Gordo banks pangas and caught a bunch of Bonito tuna and huge Sierra mackeral. I would definately recommend rentinga car and driving 45min to Los barilles or Buena Vista or Punta colorado on the East cape. The water is protected from large swells and is crystal clear. You can expect a lot of skipjack, mexican lookdowns, a couple of snapper, needlefish etc... I think the whole sightcasting for Roosterfish is a little exaggerated. Yes, I did see 2 Roosters cruising the surf but some of the Magazine articles imply that they are all over the place. You should look in the Bajaflyfishing company for guides. Well if you end up going to the East cape shoot me an email and I can give you more specifics. check out my trip report plus pictures of Cabo on the www.backwaterhawgs.com site and click the link to saltwater reports.

Go to www.gaybulla.com , he know's baja. I have also heard of a place called Buena Vista Beach Club that is near Cabo that is supposed to be a real nice to stay and/or hire a guide with a panga.
Best of luck, I hear it's great fishing

Hey there. I used to guide in East Cape, Baja. If you want to do the beach thing, east cape should be your targe area around los barriles, and la rivera. You can even do it yourself as long as your a fairly competent sight fisherman. (Rent an ATV on the main road in Los Barilles) As far as Roosters cruising everywhere, it does happen more often than people think, but it has to be at the right time of year. Also, conditions there have to be good, eg. clean water etc... March is probably too early to see that kind of action, however, monster jacks are often present and are my personal favorite beach fish to target. Or, give Jeff Debrown a call at Reel Baja,(www.reelbaja.com) he has a new operation down there and really knows the area. Check out this pic, two 40+ cruising roosters, guy blew it though.
cheers
