A recent thread has me wondering about people's prefences in vices.
The last time I bought myself a new vice was over 20 years ago when I replaced my Herters vice from the '60s with a Thompson pro.
I understand why you would want a full rotary, but I don't get the wide price range.
How about chiming in about your vice, it's bells and whistles, likes and dislikes, value for the cash etc.

I have been tying on a Barracuda Vice for 5 years and the vice works like new. I bought the table top mount and I have no problems as far as the vice moving around, even when wrenching down on a heavy saltwater pattern. It is a full rotary and the jaws are super secure. I have tied everything from a size 21 midge to a 3/0 Mullet pattern and the jaws are like new. If you are looking for something a little more economical for small flies, they make the Barracuda Jr, which is a great vice as well. Enjoy the search, it's half the fun....

I also use this vise and have found it very pleasing. My previous vise had been a $20 Cabela's so this was a big step up. A vise with a rotary feature, true rotary or otherwise is very helpful in tying well balanced flies. The jaws of the Barracuda are incredible, I broke six stainless steel Mustad 34007 trying to over tighten the vise. The grooves for holding hooks are excellant tools and very helpful. Only two complaints, cost of course as well as some of the screws dealing with tension of rotation. I sometimes find myself having to readjust the screws for ideal rotation. Excellent vise, powerful jaws and hook holding, and the rotary feature is huge for me. I don't think I'll ever have to replace this vise, but that's what they said about fiberglass! Great for the flatwings I tie that demand excellent balance and a fusiform sillouet. Unless you're planning on tying offshore flies this should be a great vise. Renzetti, however might be more economical without sacrificing quality. Good luck and don't sell the farm! ;)

I love my Regal vise. It is not true rotary but I never miss it. I think they might make one anyway. It is quick put the flies in and out of the jaws since they are spring loaded. I have tied size twenty flies to 4/0. Great vise. Don't plan to buy a new one for years. I am as happy with this vise as with my Tibor Riptide and my Kelty day pack which I bought in 1991!

Remember...."What were once vices are now habits"...The Doobie Brothers,
Vice selection is a personal choice, type and size of flies... just FYI I use a Renzetti Traveler with the Clouser Arm, The Clouser Arm really adds another dimension for me.
Good Luck,
JR
I own a Dyna-King Kingfisher. Not a true rotary but an excellent vise. I have no complaints. It holds #28 - 8/0 easily and the jaws are faultless.

A great vise, but watch out with those small trout hooks. When holding flies this small the vise becomes dangerous. I do not own a Regal but often hear people talk about how these hooks will come flying out of the vise at high speeds. Most of us aren't looking for fishing hook piercings. If you are, well... (#$119)

Used a Regal for years. It is simple and affordable.

Cabela's sells a Regal counterfeit for $36. Might not be of the same quality in some way that I can't see, but I love it, it's light on the budget. Won't cut deeply into your :-% money. grb

I think that the cam-jawed Renzetti is a nice simple, effective design. I've used a Traveller for the last 12 years, and switched to the cam version a few years ago (won in raffle). Dynaking is an excellent vise, but I couldn't find any added functionality that warranted the huge price difference. They are sort of like a status symbol IMO.
Also, I've had the Cabelas supreme?, though not the regal knock off, and they were junk. Jaws deformed in a short time.
Regals are a nice design too, and probably the best for use with students since putting the hook in is a no brainer.
