Hello everyone,

Sorry this is so overdue but might be of some use. (#$119)

I fished Ascension Bay this past April/May for a month and had a wonderful experience in the Sian Kaan Biosphere. Ended up fishing everyday except the two travel days allowed for getting there and returning back to the airport.

Caught lots of fish throughout the entire trip. Depending what kind of fishing I was doing (wading the beach or fishing the flats) determined what kind of fish I was catching. If I fished the beach I would catch many varieties of jacks, ladyfish, a variety of reef fish, some bones and also had shots at permit but they did not take. Fishing from the beach was more of a challenge to see the fish versus seeing the fish on the flats. On the beach you can just blind cast all day (it will wear you out) and catch fish but to me can be less exciting than hunting the fish like on the flats. You have to know what to look for and be ready at all times to see the fish and make the cast for a successful hookup. A really great way to fish in a paradise setting. I saw no other fisherman the whole time I fished the beach!!

On the flats I saw and caught lots of bones. Some very nice one's for the Ascension Bay area. Throughout the trip I caught and released many fish in the 6,7,8 and one in the 9 pound range!! I have always heard the fish are more numerous but smaller on average in the Carribean (which can be true). But since the banning of the netting several years ago I have noticed a big change in the size of bones that I catch on average now. Yes, 6-7 years ago I caught smaller bones, now I catch and see bigger bones on a regular basis. I'm sure you will catch the small 1-3 pound bones out of the big schools that cruise the area if that's what your targeting. But, if your target are the single and double bone's that cruise on their own you will see that they are quite a bit larger than the singles/doubles that I used to see and catch years ago. It's a great site to see this fishery getting even better.

I also did see many permit, mostly all not interested in the fly. I'm sure there are some of you out there that know this story all to well. That's permit fishing to a tee. I did manage to catch one on my last day, which made all the other permit that spit in my face and ignored the fly that much more rewarding. It seems to me, they are either hungry and show interest in your flies or not hungry and flip you off as they go by.? It's permit fishing! The one I caught was a pair swimming by which I led with a good cast. I could tell immediately when the fly entered the water that 1 of the permit saw it and showed interest right away in which I gave the fly a twitch and watched the fish pounce on it. It makes me wonder after seeing so many what made this one want to take the fly. Sure all my cast weren't great but there sure were enough good casts where I know the fish saw the fly but simply ignored it!! This is frustrating but I know it's part of the program.

I was there mid April to mid May and the weather was just about perfect the whole time until it was time for my wife to arrive. She brought the bad weather with her and it lasted for almost a full week. VERY, VERY, windy and rainy that 5 days or so. We still went out and fished in that mess and I could not beleive my wife was attempting to cast in those conditions. Not only casting but catching a few in the process.

I love this area and will be back again next April. I missed my annual trip down in November so I'm really looking forward to getting back to Ascension Bay. If your looking for a great flats fishing destination this is it!!! If anyone has any questions or thinking about goind down that way and have never been, feel free to shoot me an e-mail and I'll be happy to help you out.

Apologize for taken so long to post this but hopefully someone will get something out of it.

Have a good day,
Tim

guys, don't get confused and make others do also,,, just a strait info on locations for all OK...

pesca maya lodge is on the strip towards punta allen wich is the end of the tip,, it's not located in ascencion bay,, it,s more located in the south end mouth of boca paila lagoon!!!!! the lodge is on the ocean side and the back is facing this boca paila lagoon,,, pesca maya and all lodges in punta allen still have to make a 40min.-1hr. boat ride to get to ascencion bay!!!! you can see in there pictures that day have a strip(dirt road) on the side of lodge,, thats the road that you drive from tulum town towards punta allen,, on that road you run into many lodges as bocapaila lodge, chenchomack, cuzan, bonefishbum, allenanglers, etc,,, ,,,, loomis you stayed in the tulum-allen area, 25milles away from ascencion bay,, if you were fishing 15 min. away boat ride from the lodge then you were fishing in a part of bocapaila lagoon,,, Joej,,, you stayed at casa blanca,, that lodge is located right in the ascencion bay area, same as playa blanca and ABBC lodge,, you defenetly can't drive in in there!!! so you either fly in (they have their own planes and strip) or they drive to bocapailas bridge and they take you by boat when planes can't fly or out of service???? other lodges are now open on the further side of the bay allmost on the border to espiritu santo bay,, that area is almost intact by fisherman,, ascencion bay guides rearly venture out that far with clients cause of distance,, but the ones that make it there ,, have really had the day of a life time!!!!!! i guide in cancun and sorroundings ,,, i just came back from that area a week ago,, was there for 4 days with a client on his boat, 61' garlington sportfisher,, we use it as a mother ship and were overnighting right on the fish!!!!! we fished those unreachable areas i was telling you all about,, fish near chobon, tres marias and punta zancudo islands,,,,

Flatslammer,

Wasn't trying to confuse anybody on locations. (#$119)

Never said Pesca Maya was located "in Ascension Bay", I did say it's located on the northern tip of Ascension Bay (o.k. it's 5 minutes north of AB), but I would consider Punta Allen to be on the northern tip of AB.

You mention Pesca Maya is located "in the south end mouth of boca paila lagoon!!!!!" If you look at a map, where does the south end of BP lagoon dump into?....Ascension Bay!

When you look at a map, PM and the lodges in Punta Allen are located on the northern tip of AB, Casa Blanca and Playa Blanca are located on the Southern end of AB. ABBC lodge is not located near CB, it's located in Punta Allen unless it's moved in the last 6 months. :brow

AB covers a huge area, besides the flats of Tres Marias and Chobon and others, AB also consists of the area north of Cayo Culerbera (sp) to Punta Allen as well.

"loomis you stayed in the tulum-allen area, 25milles away from ascencion bay,, if you were fishing 15 min. away boat ride from the lodge then you were fishing in a part of bocapaila lagoon"

I disagree, I wasn't 25 miles north of AB, I was 5 kilometers north of Punta Allen (the northern tip of AB).

I agree that I was fishing the southern end of BP lagoon when fishing 15 minutes away, Paridiso (sp) to be exact. To get to Paridisio, your almost in AB, you can see it!

I'm jealous of your mothership adventure, sounds wonderful.

Sorry for the confusion. :-%

hey loomis, no problema amigou,, you're info is just the way it should be, PERFECT,,, now it will be a lot easier for the ones that want to venture out on their own when there,,, i was just trying to provide more precise info on location and i think we both made a good work!!!!! keep it up amigou,, many people needs info like this,, congratulations!!!!!!! i'll be heading that way next month for 2 weeks on a boat again,, a friend of N.Y, is comming for the sailfish season and want to fish there 2 weeks,,, i'll be far end south of AB mostly for a few day and then i'll move into espiritu santo bay for the rest of days,,,,,
Loomis,, you want to hear about a very, very, very good spot,, i don't think there's any other spot in the world left like this one,,,,, BANCO CHINCHORRO!!!!!! it's a set of keys right off mahaual,, 38milles offshore,, the keys are mostly famous for diving because of all the ship wreks, (it's the mexican bermuda triangle),,, but not famous for fishing???? people from all over the world has made documents about diving but never for fishing???
3 mean keys, cayo norte, cayo sur & cayo centro (nucleo),, this last one is where the have a marine research center and some local diver's camp there (chonch world paradise),,, but no fisherman. which is great!!!!! the other keys are used as navy bases, one by mexico and other for an USA fleet!!!
i was hired by the goverment to provide coaching and seminars about lighttackle and flyfishing industrie!!!! just to give them another option when things get hard,, those people has been remoted from reel world and hardly willing to take things from outside,,, they kinda own the islands and goverment are not to happy with that,,,, anyways,, been there a few times and with clients also, (on their boats) ,,, the fishing is unreal and the size of the bonefish ufff,, big ones 10-14+lbs,,,, and quantyties are worst,,,, send me your personal mail so i can send you some pictures of the area and the fish we caught,, i would love to post them here for others to see them but i am new to this forum and hardly know how to use it,, exept for typing!!!!!

looking forward to hear from you and other that would like to see the pictures

regards to all and many tight lines

Thanks for the detailed report loomis. Personally only made it as far the Boca Paila flats in years past, (1-3 lb fish) but fond memories of the Bioshere none the less. Ascension Bay/Punta Allen is definately on my short list.

Max,

Your welcome.

BP flats bones seem to be smaller than what I am catching in AB, don't know why this is.? I have caught some decent bones up that way but it's not the norm. Good area for permit! That's where I got my last one. :)
