Hello fellow Texas & Louisiana reel-timers. I've never had the pleasure of fishing your side of the Gulf, but will have a few opportunities to fish in the Freeport, TX area this winter. Both inshore and offshore advice is welcome; I’m far from picky. Anything from Jacks, Redfish, Black Drum, to whatever.
Any recommendations and info you have are greatly appreciated!

Capt. Elliott's out of Freeport but that's mostly for offshore. You might go a little bit north and fish Galveston bay if you're ggoing to be here for a little while.

Thanks for the PM. The center console trip looks pretty good. I'll probably try inshore for Reds first, and then look into the offshore.

Ya'll might try the Drum Hole west of Surfside, or on Christmas Bay. Possibly the surf access roads along Blue Water Hwy. With the north wind the surf ought to be knocked down. Good Luck !!

Shoot me a PM when you get down here. I have a buddy that is planning on fishing out of Freeport for the next coupkle of trips. It's not certain but maybe we'll have room for a genuine yankee fisherman!
Santiago,
I'll be fishing south of you from Port O'Connor down the line to Corpus Christi arround Jan 19 thru 23. I love Matagorda Bay and LaGuna Madre!
Enjoy! And Merry Christmas!

Oh you'll be in the best spot on the Texas coast for offshore fishing! You can hit deeper water faster from POC and south. I think Dolphindocks in Port Aransas is putting together tuna trips in January.

Santiago,
I'll be sure to give you a PM when I'm booked-up to head your way. Sounds like a good time. ...as far as "genuine yankee fisherman" goes, I may be from the North, but I'm a sox fan, not a Yankee fan ;)

Lol I didn't even think of that. Sorry for that insult. I really enjoyed watching the curse get broken. I think most of the rest of the country feels that way too. Yea he's talking about going in another couple of weeks. Wahoo been biting offshore, but it'll depend on his work schedule.

No offense taken... I just could resist :)
I'm lookin forward to gettin' down there. Looks like Feb & March will see a trip each, and work is sponsoring a day with our customer for one of the trips, which makes it all too easy... I'll let you know how we do.

Santiago,
Minor change of plans. We will be quail hunting in Zapata County from 1/17 to 19 and since we are that far south we are looking to hit the southern end of Laguna Madra. Port Mansfield on down to Port Isabel - 1/20 - 23.
Any comments you might have on the bay fishing would be appreciated.
Pt. Mansfield doesn't look big enough to support a motel. Any Suggestions?
How bout flys - I'm bringing my Florida assortment Mc Veys, Kwans, crabs and gotchas + some light tackle plugs and spoons for the spinning rod.
Gold Johnsons, rubber shrimp, small rattle traps and other rubber delectables!

RJ, Here are a couple of top notch lodges in that area.

There are some good fish down there this time of year, if the weather doesn't bite you. Nothing like some Blackened Redfish and Grilled Blue Quail. Buena Suerte, AC

Here you go RJ, my friend's e-mail form Port M-
"The best Motel here is the Casa Grande Motel and their phone # is 956-944-2182.
I don't do much bay fishing, but I know a lot of guys, depending on time of year, do use flyfishing gear. Little streamers with sinking lines work good, and of course, poppers and the like for on top. I like to fish the drop offs on the ICW about halfway between PM and PI where the little fishing shacks are on the sides of the ICW. That's about all the fishing I've done Southwards from here. Sorry I can't be more help."
Gentlemen,
Thank you for the tips. The weather did blow us out, but the blue scale and bob white coveys were big and numerous. For a while there I thought I was going to run out o 20 guage ammo.
Great time and great people. The family that invited us lost a son in Iraq a couple of weeks ago. He was the son of a rice farmer in Eagle Lake, TX. The whole town and a good part of Colorado County attended the funeral.
He is the first service man killed from Colorado County since the Korean war.
The family and all his friends and neighbors will miss him.
Amen!

Good to hear you had a good time, sorry about the timing. I went to school with the father of the soldier and have known the family the better part of my life. I had a similar situation with the son of a co-worker of 20 years later last year.
Hopefully, you'll make it back when the weather is a little more cooperative.
