Hi, my son has been exposed to both fishing & now fly tying through the Boy Scouts. He's 12 and is a nut for tying flys & I'd like to build a desk that's designed for the hobby - and can handle home work too. I've googled for plans and examples and have found people selling desks but no plans. I was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction and possibly list some points they like in a desk.

So far it looks like the basic needs are alot of drawers and open space. Would there be anything else? Thanks.

depends on the size of room he has to do this in my room is vey limted to size. so i bought a wrighting desk at k mart .or www.kmart.com for 30 usaly 49.99 this desk was on sale item # 102909 . plus i bought a kids full sized dresser for 39.99 at a after labor day sale at value city furniture in novi michigan works great for materials storage. and i had my dad build me a fly tying work station. i though up the plans for it to bad they are not on paper. any thing as small as a mission style wrighting desk wood work. by the way plans for mission style wrighting desks can be found at wood working stores.
don't go to pricy on materials because epoxy can destroy a desk. what i suggest is white oak or a cheaper wood like maple from a lumber yard or a custom wood cutter like my dad go's through. also a lot of book room or a book case
the desk i got was made with a book case in it. and had enough room for a small hook storage milk crate type box from walmart for 8 dollars. would take pictures but my digtal was stolen.

any ways good luck and tight lines rhino --123-3 --123-3 --123-3

An "entertainment" centre...
The kind with big swing out doors and a HeavyDuty slide out shelf up top and drawers down below...
Put strips of velcro (hooks) on the inside walls and doors...
Put dots of velcro (loops) on tying material bags...
The interior walls/doors can be effective vertical storing surfaces for lots of easy to see/find tying stuff...
The HeavyDuty slide out shelf will serve as home plate for a vise, light, and tools...and can be a desk as well!
Drawers for everything else...
It closes up when not in use and can be put on LARGE caster wheels for room to room mobility.

There is a great post on another forum about this topic with LOTS of pictures of everyones tying desks, benches, storage and everything you can think of... You'll need to do a search over at www.flyanglersonline.com.

I hope I am not violating the TOS here at reel-time by posting this other website. It's just that there is a really great post that is pertinent to this topic I saw in there last winter...

generally any desk top will do. Most tying organizers sit ontop of a desk. If you search cabelas fly tying/bass pro and orvis they sell tying organizers which mostly store a wide variety tools and such. There very easily made if you have any woodworking ability. Just looking at it you'll know what i mean.
Also, there's 00's of tying sites that you may find soe plans.

Just a tip from when i started tying. Don't buy any material "kits" you'll end up with way more material than you'll ever use or mostly need. Buy materials according to which fly your going to tie.

do some thing like i did for the desk. wood working is the straw that broke the camels back.for the reason it takes to long to build some fine wood desk to be valued at thousands of dollars and you son spill epoxy on it or dab the black marker on it (you know how young kids and paint are)i think it is 50 dollars for the desk i said for the reason i say this you can not buy a sheet of cheap ply wood for this price.it also has a place for storage of either milk crates whith to rods throught the sides so you can hang hanging file folders from them.to store necks etc... that or plastic shoe boxes you can pick up at the local dollar store along with endless tupper ware you can find there. you can find more thinks by just looking at them like shoe racks at kmart they sit tilted back you could build some think like this or buy a cheap book case to hold them i think the cheapest i have seen one for was 39.99 plus it will hold books a.k.a. shoe box fly tying kits there is a web address i will post with a small box if you wanted a idea for some thing for travel here is the web address for the box http://www.gateslodge.com/shop.htm any ways
