I BET THIS HAS HAPPEN TO YOU, A DAY FISHING FOR YOUR FAVORITE SPECIES AND THEN SWOOOSHH!! A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FISH, SOMETHING YOU'VE NEVER EXPECTED STRIKES.
MINE WAS A KIND OF CAT FISH CALLED RAYADO OR BAGRE TIGRE, IN ARGENTINA THEY CALL THEM SORUBIM (PSEUDOPLATISTOMA fasciatus) ITS A VERY STRONG AND AGRESSIVE CAT FISH, BUT IT IS USUALLY FISHED DEEP DOWN ON NETS BY COMERCIAL FISHERMEN.
ITS NOT UNCOMMON THEY BITE A DEEP RAPALA, BUT I WAS A LUCKY GUY WHEN AN 8 POUNDER (THIS IS AN ALEWIBE THEY GROW UP TO 100 POUNDS PLUS) BITE MY CLOUSER ON A SINKING TIP LINE IN THE ORINOCO RIVER ON A DEAD DRIFT WHILE LOOKING FOR PAYARAS
i MAYBE THE ONLY FISHERMAN WHO HAS CAUGHT THIS GUY ON A FLY.
WHATS YOUR STORY????
AND CHEERS FOR THOSE SURPRISING ENCOUNTERS :-%

I was doing some work on a coastal zone above the arctic circle. It was July so I thought I'd bring my Fly rod because I figured the ice on the ocean would have melted and I could pick off a few char. Take a walk down to a river I noticed as I flew in and was severlyt bummed out that it was just run off water & about 2 inches deep.. Checkout the Ocean & yep the ice was still 7 feet thick (as measured by sticking my flyrod through a crack in the ice).... severly depressed so I drop my fly between the ice crack and work a wooly bugger & eureeka I get a nice hit... pull it it in and who would have figured ...I got a COD!

Nothing special ...just a weird story.

I thought I may have had one of those in my fishtank when I was in college! The thing ate goldfish like there was no tomorrow.

Nothing quite that dramatic up here in Michigan but when a 15 lb. Steelhead grabs your nymph instead of a 1lb. trout your 4 weight sure takes a beating!

Cod on a fly....that's a new one for me. Maybe it was a tippet class record?
