Mark, I love Mason hard mono! I use it to make saltwater leaders that will turn over in those 15 - 20 knot winds. Typically for a 9 to 12 foot leader, I use use 4 - 5 feet of 40 lb Mason for the butt, then 18 - 24 " of 30 lb, 8 -12" foot of 25 lb, 8 - 12" of 20 lb mason. At this point I switch to something like 8 - 12 inches of 15 lb Ande or Seaguar and then add 18 -24" of tippit (8 -12 lb mono of flouro).
You tend to get big knots with hard mason. Don't use more than 3 turn blood knots with the heavy stuff (30 and 40 lbs) and 4 turns with the 20 and 25 lb and make sure you wet the knots thoroughly before tightening. Straighten the mason by stretching the leader. I loop the butt section (perfection loop) and hook it onto something very solid. I then use leather gloves and stretch the leader. Once straightened, it will turn over very well.
Best of the season!
