Headed 150 miles north of Acapulco, Mexico next week to Ixtapa. What should I bring for fishing the beaches on the fly?
I am told there is great rooster fishing from the beaches.

i just came back from ixtapa, i was there the week of 12/10-12/19,but misses out on the roster, when we went north they went south when we went south they where north..did some great sail fish on the fly raising between 5-7 fish a day, i hooked only two, but it was my first time. from what i here, bring the big gun for the rooster.i went down with a 1 6 wt, 3 8wts, 1 9 wt, 1 10 wt, & 1 12 wt, there where two of us fishing so we kind just brought everything. we also brought a couple of spinners, cause if the rooster are'n in thick your better off throw the spinner

last February and unfortunately discovered it was not prime time for roosters. The best time of year for them is in May-August(rainy season-when all of the Bocas open up on the beaches). One of the guides specialized in roosters though and the guys who went with him hooked a giant one on a live bait which broker off and had one other come up in the baits.
You will be there at PRIME TIME for sailfish(we're talking multiple fish on the fly) though which can be caught fairly close to shore. There may be some yellowfin tuna around as well as well as other offshore species(dolphin, wahoo, etc...)
Guides for the super pangas (which on a reasonably calm day can get you out to the sailfish) are dirt cheap but do some research and make sure you get a referral for a decent boat.

The ultimate roosterfish guide's boat is Dos Hermanos I(not II) so if you can get him you will have a shot at roosters.

I recently met a man at a fly show here in CT. who designs flies specifically for Roosters and he fishes them in Costa Rica with good results (he says). I bought a few as I plan to be in Costa Rica Feb. and part of March. Let me dig up his card and you can email him. If you are interested drop me a line with your email address. Thunnus69@yahoo.com
Good Luck,

The above statements are correct- Winter is not a great time for roosters and the Xtapa and tourist areas are over fished (in my opinion). Although you can have good fishing on sails like mentioned above. Nothing like Guatamala but like 4-8 shots/day. I'm organizing a trip south of the tourist areas for April to really unfished beaches/areas in search of better rooster fishing.

Good luck fishing.... ;)
