View Full Version : Anyone been to Long Island recently?
I'll be in Miami for a medical continuing education conference the first weekend of February, so being the resourceful guy I am I've made arrangements to spend a couple days at Stella Maris on Long Island, Bahamas. I've read all I can find on past posts about Long Island/Stella Maris, just wondering if anyone has been there recently and can offer advice. This won't be a pure fishing trip and I am not planning on hiring a guide, I will just spend a couple hours here and there dunking lines; need to spend the rest of my time hanging out with the wife.

I have not yet been to Long Island but will be following right after you, in later February. So, I'd appreciate a report on how it goes. I am going to be spending most of the time on the South end of the island, though.
Best of luck.
fished there a while back. Bring wading shoes as Long Island has some of the best wadeable flats up towards the N and then again about 45 min south near deadman's (not being cagey on location, but my memory would likely steer you wrong with specifics). I hear you on self sufficiency but I highly recommend calling Docky Smith if even for a half day. He is one of the best guides in the bahamas, period. Very professional. I think he calls his operation bonafide bonefishing, and he lives in or around Stella Maris. I believe he has a website you can find with a search.

Docky Smith is your best bet by far. Although Maurice Rahming is also very good too. Docky may already be booked so don't delay in scheduling some time with a guide. Say hello to them for me and to Jill (Docky's wife) at Stella Maris.
If you fish Columbus Cove on your own, you'll need to cross the narrow part at low tide to fish the flat on its eastern side. But watch out for bull sharks coming into the channel when the tide rises; it is very close to deep ocean water there.
Otherwise, try the flats at Adderly Bay or Glenton Sound where the road passes these places. Deadmans Cay is too far to drive and you really need a guide if you go there to reach any flats. Try Clyde Knowles if you good there, he is fabulous.
