I will be in St. Croix in the first week of April for a family trip and hoping to sneak in some fishing. Any suggestions on fishing from shore? I will pack fly or spin, depending on prior guidance.

I have tried searching for info with little luck due to (i) an apparent lack of information and (ii) a rod maker of the same name that mucks up any searches. I think (i) means the fishing may be limited due to the underwater topography (deep drop off). Sounds like there are some macks and maybe cudas? Just trying to relax and enjoy myself.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have vacationed on St. Croix twice and it is a great island. We stayed at a place called the Comorant Beach Club. The last time we were there was 1997, so I don't know if the hotel is still in business or not. It was near a place called the Hibiscus Beach Hotel. About 2 miles from Christiansted. There is a lot of nice reef in that area. If you get out early before the tourists hit the beach, you should have some luck using light tackle. Use of smaller plugs and hard baits could yield various kinds of reef fish. You could probably probe hard for what's out there by tying a piece of squid onto a hook, weighting it down just enough to cast against the wind, and flicking it out there. Use about 10-14 lb spinning tackle. If working the bait directly over the reefs, put on some 30lb fluro leader to avoid getting stolen by a 'cuda. Or use some steel leader. The U.S.V.I. has some good beach fishing opportunities. In St. John, I have caught snook, jacks, bonefish, shark, snapper and 'cuda right from shore. But again, get out before the sun comes up and the beach lovers start coming out. Rent a car, and you could try multiple places during your trip. If there is water, the important thing is to fish!
