This summer while in Grand Bahama I rented a Cessna 172 and took some photos of a number of different flats and access points towards the Eastern end of GBI. In reviewing these photos I noticed a couple pictures that were taken inadvertently of what appears to be Sweetings Cay. I do not have shots of the entire Cay just what appears to be a large ocean side flat that at least at low tide looks to be promising.
Since fishing this area requires taking the ferry from Mcleans town it will more than likey be a whole day commitment if I decide to fish it. Before I schedule SC as a day trip I was hoping to get some feedback as to whether or not anyone has fished this area out of Deep Water Cay, or McLeans Town and has any suggestions.
Thanks,
Mike

I have fished it with a guide, on a boat out of McClains Town. There were plenty of bones around the harbor area, but I don't know about the beach or how accessable things are on foot closer to the bank. If in doubt, you could go guided one day or a half day and DIY the next. When you drive out there is a very boney flat just before you get to town as well.

Loopy,
I have fished out of McCleans Town a number of times - but it seems that Perry always fishes the backside of Deep Water, Lightbourne, and Sweetings. Perry is aware that my trips are depending more and more on DIY options and tends to run far from any access roads (this is not a bad thing).
The area that I am reffering to is just to the right of the public Dock before you pull into the sweetings Cay channel. The shots from the plane show a road that runs the entire length of the Flat on Sweetings (1.5 miles?) - from the air it appears to be a massive sand flat intersected by a number of shallow swashes that lead up to the deep channel intersecting Lightbourne and Sweetings. Is this the flat that you fished - If so do you remember the tide and approximate depths in the area?
Thanks,
Mike

The DIY flat I was referring to is on the way into McClain's Town. The guides often run over to it first thing in the morning and quite often there are women poling boats looking for conch there as well. Actually kind of a scenic photographable sort of a place early. in the day. I think that there is a cemetery on shore. My son went out this past fall and said he saw and missed a huge bonefish.
I have seen bones in the inner harbor area of Sweetings and I walked a flat I think on the north side and that was after being dropped off from a boat. I haave fished on the back side also from a boat. One area had tailing fish and it was almost at high tide so it must be very shallow otherwise. I have never paid any attention to the land accessability.
My next aspiration for DIY is on the north side. It will require a 4 wheel drive and a GPS. As you look at a map, there are numerous creeks coming in off the north side. They may or may not be wadeable, but they are certainly underfished. Water Cay and maybe Riding point fish there some, but it looks otherwise pretty untouched.

Loopy - I think you are referring to the Rocky Creek area. That Flat offers 7 miles of Oceanside Flats. I am very familar with that Flat. We should compare notes offline - I have extensively and succesfully fished 6 or 7 very productive Flats on the Island.
Good luck on the Northside - I can give you two areas that are accessible and and productive - but usually only when the tide is low and tails are visible. That bottom on the Northside is a son of a gun to spot fish (at leat for me) when wading. I usually guide when on that side.
If you want to compare locations feel free to email me.

Mike
