Hi everyone,
I just moved within Newton, near the Waltham line, and I see the Charles in a new light these days. There are portions around the Newton, Watertown and Waltham lines that look like some fun fishing. Does anyone know if there is a trout population in these upper Charles sections, if it's fishable, and any particular towns where the fishing is nice (Watertown sections between Galen and Moody? Or anything beyond Waltham)?

I just had never considered flyfishing on the Charles before, but I've read in plenty of books that the Charles used to be a first-class trout stream.
Any thoughts?

The upper reaches of the Charles are still excellent trout waters. Around Waltham, Newton, etc, it's more of a bass and panfish fishery, though there are still occassional trout. I'm no expert on the river though, so maybe I've just been to the wrong spots? ;)

If you're looking for trout, head out to the Millis, Sherborn, Medfield area and fish the upper Charles and its tributaries.

Hi, Go to WWW.ALONGTHECHARLES.COM. Major info source on the Charles. The upper river is stocked with trout down to Needham area. Good Pike in lakes region. An 18+lb. taken thru the ice just a few days ago. The picture is displayed at The Bait Bucket in Waltham. That fish was safely returned to the river after verification. It is a PIN fish. LGBass are pretty much everywhere I have weighed in fish over 6lbs. several times during the year. Smallies have made the river below Moody St. Dam their home. (check On The Water Magazine Nov. 2004 issue.) New enforcement regulations and policing policies are being established right now pertaining to the river herring and striped bass fishery in the Charles to be employed this spring. BE WARNED ALL POACHERS AND VIOLATORS YOU WILL BE STOPPED. NO LONGER WILL THE THIEVES FROM AS FAR AWAY AS FITCHBURG, FALL RIVER, CAPE COD, N.H., AND R.I. BE ALLOWED TO ASSAULT THIS FISHERY. TO THOSE WHO FOLLOW THE RULES AND APPRECIATE WHAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE TO US, I SAY WELCOME. WE ARE NOT "TREE-HUGGERS" WE ARE SPORTSMEN.
