My family and I are thinking of a family vacation out in Montana, Jackson Hole, etc. this summer. We have two boys 14 and 11 and they love to fish and be outdoors. can anyone recommend a good lodge, guide or even an example of a family trip they took.

Thank you
Fred

Hey Fred, Im from Montana (living in NYC). Try looking at Yellowstone Valley Ranch, located in Paradise Valley, my favorite trout fishing location in the world. There are many good operations there, in Paradise V. You could not fish in a prettier location, and the fishing is incredible. You have so many options there, mountain lakes, spring creeks, the yellowstone, the park is right there. Look at yellowstonevalleyranch.com, or check out some of the others, there are many. With Yellowstone Valley Ranch, go with Peter Howell, or Eric Adams, incredible guides. If you need any advice just let me know, I know many other guides and lodges. Good luck, oh, would not go to Jackson for fishing. Its beautiful, but MT is a much better choice if your primary concern is catching trout.

Montana may be better for the real deal in regard to a trout vacation, however with a family vacation don't overlook the Jackson Hole area.

The mrs. can do some shopping in downtown Jackson. You have restaurants of all ethnicites and prices, art galleries, and the like. Just outside of town along airport road runs the National Elk Refuge where in the summer, you can walk out to Flat Creek and see the trout your after. Their wily and cautious but the kids would dig the sight casting deal. You can take a family float down the Snake for either fishing, wildlife sight seeing (Go early AM). You can also hike the Grand Tetons on user friendly trails, Jenny Lake, etc. See plenty of wildlife in the early mornings and evening, elk, mouse, buffalo (gros ventre area) etc. Drive the Jackson to Moose road early mornings. Horseback riding and Rodeo's are all part of the flair

You can then drive 1:30 + to the South Entrance to Yellowstone National and can then fly fish the Madison, Firehole, Gibbon, Yellowstone, etc. More beutifull scenery, Old Faithfull etc. A whole nother vacation in itself if you want to stay a few nights in the Park. Check out the Old Faithfull Inn there's also lodging in Mamoth which is in the NW corner of the park off the Montana line.

Can't go wrong anywhere between Montana and Wyoming for the "out west" family vacay.

I second the Jackson hole idea. Lots of things to do. I live in JH dec - march every year. Also - Idaho has some great rivers that are 1hr to 2hr drive. Guys at westbank anglers are helpful.
