I ogt the crazy i dea of free diving for carp on the delaware. I have a camp up there and kayaking i saw some massive carp. My idea is to make an enlongated snorkel, put on a mask, flippers, and cotton gloves. Then I will sit on the bottom and chum for carp and when one comes along ill grab it by the tail (#$119) . Im not going to go very deep though. Only a few feet down. any one have any suggestions for my crazy scheme?

If you go to one of the more elaborate nurseries that sells plants, flowers, ect and sit in one the pools that has koi in it, these fish will come right to you if you have something to feed them. They may even try to jump up and kiss you.

You will find that trying to breath through a snorkel three feet in length is almost impossible. The water pressure on you chest increases dramatically with each 1 you dive. The snorkel would also have to decrease in diameter as you lengthen it otherwise yyou would not get a full exchange of fresh air with each breath , you would end up breathing the same old C02 ladened air over and over until zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Which is a bad thing 4' under water.

Ya that may be a problem. May be i could stick something strong down the tube to hold it open. Do u think that would work Bob?

bob is right about the snorkel. do what i do-- free dive quietly till you see a fish, lay on the surface, bring a hand line, bait it with corn or something for carp i guess (i do this with saltwater fish) and drop the bait down to the fish. hang on. yes, i'm serious.

Best of luck with your scheme. Hopefully your exploits wont feature in the runners up section of the Darwin awards.

It's been a long winter.

The problem is not with the tube but with the diaphrams (breathing muscle) ability to move air. Divers with tanks have a regulator that makes it easier and easier for the pressurized air in the tank to force into the lungs. They do have recreation systems that pump air down to a diver from the surface good for depths maybe 20'.
Come warm weather jump into the deep end of a pool and try taking a breath through a garden hose, You'll be on the surface soon.

there is actually a documentary on leanardo di vinci this weekend (at least here in ny) that discusses his problems with developing a long distance snorkel and breathing apparatus--just in case you're interested. like i said, learn how to hold your breath, and free dive.

make sure that someone has a video camera taping this.

After catching a couple thousand carp, I can't understand how you are going to "grab them by the tail." (#$119) But I can be a little slow at times. I'm sure that you already know that carp are an extremely spooky fish.

If you really have the urge to get aboriginal, and fish by hand (#$119) , I suggest trying the smaller tributaries off of Lake Ontario in October. With your same gloves, you should be able to sneak up behind (below) some nasty, mold and fungal infected, chinooks and tail them. Sort of like the carp thing except you don't have to be concerned with a snorkel/mask combo.

Good luck with the carp, if you try it...they are pretty smart and tend not to hang around in one place very long if there is an intruder, not to mention that they are difficult to tail, unlike the aforementioned salmon. ;)

Thanks Guys, i think i will try the handlining from the surface first.

Danny me being a science nut have seen that Leonardo Di Vincci documentary before also.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor, when are you gonna do this? Not to dispel the idea of catching fish with bare hands I have done it while visiting my grandparents' house in upper New York on the Lake Skineateles, I was able to catch both rock bass and perch using a snorkle and my bare hands. Keep in mind, the water up there is almost crystal clear, which may not be the case on the Deleware.

I bet you could just feed him some of the grass your smoking and the carp will just swim to the surface...no need for a snorkel that way.

On the delaware where i fish unless we just got a huge rainstorm the water is crystal clear.
