Hi,

I am looking to purchase a moderately priced saltwater reel and am considering the Trion Model 1990 reel. This reel is pretty cheap and extra spools are only about $45.00. Anyone have any experience, comments about these reels. What is the difference between this reel and some of the $400-$700.00 brands, Tibor, Hardy ect... Is it all about the Drag, bearings? I have a great appreciation for well made precision things but for a saltwater fly reel is the money worth it or is it a brand status thing?

Thanks,

Salmon

I am new to the sport and used mine last year. I like it very much.

I have a couple Trions, the 1989 and the 1990, that have seen moderate use on the bonefish flats and freshwater the past couple of years. They do seem to be well made for a $100 +/- reel and mine still look brand new. The drag is smooth enough but I really would like to be able crank it down more. I hooked a good size cuda in Mexico on my 1990 and I could apply enough brakes to stop the fish without palming the reel. Still, it's no big deal to plam a reel,,, used to do it all the time back in the old days of reels with clickers only and no drags.
