I am going there for the first time in about two weeks. Looking forward to this one for a while!
I am going to bring a spinning rod that I use on the New England Coast that handles plugs and jigs up to about 2 oz. plus two 9wt fly outfits.
Does this sound sufficient to anyone who has already been there?
What about tipping? I am going to be doing three days of panga fishing. How much do I tip the skipper and mate if any?
One last item. Where can I feed myself there? I was told when I booked the trip that meals were not included. So I guess I have to feed myself. Where is there to eat there? And how much would I expect to spend per day?

are you talking about the area north of los barilles on baha peninsula?

I think so. Hotel Punta Colorada is on Baja's East Cape. North of San Jose Del Cabo. The only map I have is on the Hotel Brochure and Los Barrilles isn't marked on the map.

if we are talking about the same spot, the only place to eat is at the hotel.
you will need transportation into los barrilles to eat at tio pablos or the other dining venues, other hotels in town offer food.
los barrilles is a windsurf destination.
hotel punta colorado was a neat older out of the way spot that most people flew into, it has it's own air strip and used to have the worst dirt road to drive into. the road may have improved.i was last ther 4-5 years ago.
south of the hotel about two or so miles is a nice section of beach to hang at. a large outcropping of rock was a fun spot to cast to BIG needle fish,
you can't retrieve too fast, these fish liked to chase thier prey!
los barrilles to the hotel was about 12-15 miles
hope this helped.
good luck.

I was there last july. Great place. The only place to eat is at the hotel. You are only a short boat ride to los Barilles, but to get there by car you need to make long detour inland on a dirt road and it would take at least 45min to get into town. we got into a lot of Dorado down there. I would also recommend renting an ATV and driving down the Beach. You should be able to get into some huge Skipjack, Mexican Lookdowns, Grouper and perhaps jacks or roosters. My brother saw a pair of Roosterfish cruising near the Lighthouse. ( You are much better off with an ATV then by walking the Beach the lighthouse is a couple miles away from the Hotel) You will probably get some Rooster fish with the spinning outfits on the fly is very difficult. if you want to see some pics of my trip check out the www.backwaterhawgs.com website. find the link to forum, then saltwater link and scroll back to july for east cape trip. good luck. leave us a trip report when you get back. wittich.

Hey, Punta Colorado is awesome. Was once the place to be, like someone said they have their own airstrip from a time when driving there was a total job. Say Hi to Senior Flores! If you take an ATV north to the first large rock outcrop, about 2 miles, you will find some fun fishing. You have to be patient, but the rocks bring the BIG jacks into the north corner chasing bait within casting distance before they realize they are about to be beached. Also, you would never see it, but if things are slow, look very very very closely for croakers right in the beach break between the large outcropping and the next small set of rocks north, about two hundred yards. They are always there, and williing to eat a tiny small clouser, if you dont spook them first as they have the anxiety of bonefish. You will be a little early for the roosterfish burst, but the big jacks are there and this is a great time. After the large rock outcropping, go about three miles, just so you can see the small town of La Rivera, and it is the Jack alleyway, a very straight beach. Keep your eyes open for cruisers, and get well ahead of them. If that doesnt work, work the lighthouse point blind casting, especially when there is wind and nothing else to do. Let it sink deep, fifteen seconds, and keep it up. I have seen the largest jacks in all of baja pulled off this point, over 20 pounds. have fun, let me know if you have any q's. Like the other poster said, hit up tio pablo's for dinner, or the little street stand up the street from the school, they have amazing tortas.
