I know this as been discussed before but while I was doing a little pre-spring cleaning in the basement. I found a spinning outfit that I must have purchased when I first moved back here and started fishing for Stripers. It is a 8' BWS 1100 Ugly Stick medium action rated for 10 - 25lb with an Pinnacle Absolute 60 rated for 230 yds of 17lb test up to 110 yds of 30lb test line.

Would this be enough rod and reel to tackle SBFT's?
What type of line should I put on this reel?

Maybe enough for the chunk bite south of MV, but not for the Bay tuna.

But there is a certain "Nauti" fellow here whose avatar shows a 50# bluefin he landed on a 9wt. So....On a somewhat unrelated topic...

Rip,

Spooling up 2 Penn 114h 6/0s on 30-80s and one 113h on a 30-50 for tuna trolling north of Cape Ann.

After weighing a bunch of options - thinking about going with straight mono.

I am thinking 60 for he 114s and 50 for the 113. Some guys at my club are telling me to put 80 on the 114s.

I am also leaning toward yellow line (as opposed to my traditional green.)

Any thoughts ?

I am only planning on targeting the little guys to start with.

That's what we all say

then they splash in front of the boat and all hell breaks loose

so much for planning --124-3

Maybe for the little schoolie fish of 10-30 lbs that are often encountered in the places like the butterfish hole or mudhole while chunking butterfish (probably included in some of the areas that Terry was alluding to in his post). However, any of the larger 'schoolies' that approach 100lbs would probably hardly realized they're hooked. Most of the bay fish are on the larger size of what is considered schoolie tuna.

Hi Bob,

I agree with Terry. If you're fishing down near the mudhole (Point Judith), your set up would probably work fine. If your going North of the canal, I'd recommend a Shimano Thunnus (16000F) with 50lb spectra and about 3 to 4 feet of 40lb fluorocarbon for the leader. Another decent option would be the Penn 9500SS.

Tight Lines!
