How thick is the ice on the Cape trout ponds? Any idea when I can break out the fly rod?

Wequaquet looked covered when I drove by yesterday and caught a glimpse. Hamblins in covered. Mashpee-Wakeby is mostly covered but what ice there is looks pretty cheesy.

I have no first-hand evidence of how thick the cover is. Bob Parsons might.

I fished yesterday at Big Cliff Pond in Brewter Ma( NO ICE!) However it was extremlly cold, and we did not even get a bite. I'm thinking that it was too, cold the trout might be sluggish? Don't know, but there was no ice on that pond. GOOD LUCK!

I am also happy to report Cliff pond is open for business - I counted 19 guys there by 10:00 AM this morning (no joke) - Real slow fishing - not many fish pulled out for the number of guys there - I managed 3 rainbows during 6 hours of fishing - one guy using a spoon landed 2 nice salmon.

little cliff had some open water - and the ponds you can see along the RT 6 drive all had huge patches of open water. I think this will be the week that most of the cape ponds really start to unlock.

I thought cabin fever was going put my in the grave - get out there if you can.

Maspee-Wakeby has some open water. As Dave says Wequaquet is iced over. Monday I'll do a thickness test and check Peter's pond as well.

Seems like we all were in the same area today.

My report:

Big Cliff: Open

Little Cliff: about 80 % ice covered

Flax Pond: 100 % ice covered

Herring Pond (Eastham): Open, cept for some shell ice here and there

Hoxie Pond (Sandwich): 100 % ice covered

None of the ponds that had ice on the outer cape appeared safe to me.

I was skunked as well, although I definitely had some light hits on flies and lures. Need a warmup. The power baiters were getting about 1 fish every two hours  .

As for herring, nothing spotted in any of the Cape runs, including Middleboro on the way back.

Water temp in Herring Pond was about 38 degrees in early afternoon.

Peter's still has ice and so does wequacket although neither of them should have too much by the weekend. Was at both of them tis morning to check.

I measured ice thickness at several ponds at close to 8". The top 4 is pretty soft. Peter's pond I did not go on. Ice by the ramp had receeded off close to 6'. Off on the left side there was quite a bit of open water. Knowing how it drops off there is actually a big enough open water section that you could fish it with a rod.
