Hi all, my first post so go easy :)
Ive got a Sage XP 10 wt here that hardly ever gets used. To me it doesnt really feel like a salt water fly rod. I much prefer my TCR and XI2's.
Before I put it up for sale, I'd be interested to hear others oppinions on using XP's on inshore speedsters....(tuna, trevally, flats etc...)
Regards Nat (Noosa Australia).

Nat,
If you don't want the Sage XP 10wt. I'll take it off your hands. Granted it is not designed to do heavy lifting, but IMO it is the best shallow water/flats saltwater rod out there, love it for albies and skinny water, my favorite casting rod on the planet.........how many pieces is it?

In my own opinion the Xi2 is a rocket launcher and I have only cast a 6 weight. If you want to save a few bucks go with the Thomas & Thomas Horizon, not the new model but the discontinued ones.I have cast both and the older model is my preference.Either of these rods are cannons that are more than capable of throwing out your intire line(I got a easy 80-90' with the Xi2 and more with the T&T) I have no need for that distance but I had to know if I could do it,you know a macho thing. If you need the link to the T&T shoot me an email and I'll get it to you.
Mike.

I agree with you RE the lifting power Peter...
I used to own an XP 8 wt that I did use for Bonefish in New Caledonia, it was great on the flats but I wouldnt want to have a 6kg tuna ,circling under the boat, on the end of it...That rod, the XP 8wt, always felt like a good Bass rod, so I sold it and got an RPLXi.
(The XP 10 is a 4 pc....but here in Australia...a long way from NJ)
Lil Trout..Im crazy about XI2's, have got an 8 and 10 ( a client busted the 8 on a 12kg Bluefin tuna a few weeks ago --124-3 )
Havent ever cst a T&T but will do some day...So many good fly rods out there.

My striper guns are a T&T and Loomis GL 3 10 wts. Great into the wind casters. I like them both. and have had them for more than 5 years or more.
Nat in Aus - I'm headed your way in Jan. 06 to visit my son and daughter-in-law in Sydney. Hows the fishing that time of the year? I plan on bringing a pair of 7 wts too.
Any special color combinations on clouser and deciver patterns you like for local inshore fish?

RJ...
Great time of the year to be fishing our shores...Middle of summer, warm water, lots of bait and fish around.
Inshore species include (Im talking Queensland here) Mack tuna (similar to Albies), Longtail Tuna in shallow water !!, Golden trevally (on the flats as well), Spotted Mackeral...
Good old white deceivers / clousers work. Gummy Minnows have been very productive this season, as have small baitfish profiles/ candies and clousers tied in DNA material (not sure if you have that stuff over there). PM or email me for any further tips mate..It 'd be a pleasure to help out.
Regards Nat :)
Hi Nat,
I agree that that the XP 10wts don't have the 'minerals' for the big stuff. There were 3x 10wt XP's on a trip to Cuba I was on. Every single one got busted on larger than expected Tarpon (and few other rods also). These rods don't seem to have the required lifting power that this type of fishing needs. For flats type fishing I think the XP's are great.
Cheers
John
