I have searched the thread for info on these reels and have not found many recent opinions on them.

They seem to be decent reels and can be found on certain large online auction websites :brow at very reasonable prices.

Any R/T'ers have an opinion on these reels for use in the saltH2O?

Much appreciated!

The heck with it.

I was tired of waiting and I bought a Tioga #10 Large Arbor for $116. They have gotten such great reviews, and they are a good price, that if I don't like it, it won't be an expensive mistake.

How's the Tioga working?

I've got both the Tioga 10 Large arbor, a Ross Gunnison 3, an FLO 456 and an FLP 567.

I've got no issues with the durability of my Tioga. The simplicity of the design is pretty thoughful in its simplicity and function. You can change the retrieval of the reel in a few seconds with a small philips head screwdriver. It's interesting that the most simple design I've seen works so well. I did have a few issues with the clicker having a burr when shipped that wore a groove in the clutch before I was able to file it smooth with a file, but there's not enough damage to effect performance. Another issue I've noticed is that the fully caged design is somewhat prone to binding or jamming up in the event that sand gets between the frame and the spool. It tends to happen while running my line through the guides on my rod, and is pretty easily cleaned away. I do not know if this issue is just inherent with fully caged reels or if the Tioga's tight tolerences cause the binding.

The bottom line is that my FLO is really my nicest reel. It has a strong and smooth drag, and the one-way clutch is a nice feature that eliminates the slight jarring when the spool has to back up to engage the clutch on standard reels. There is nothing wrong with the other setup, and I haven't had issues losing any huge quantity of fish that I attributed directly to a less smooth drag engagement. However, given the choice, I'd choose a reel with the one-way clutch bearing. It's also got some other thoughtful little dodads like a tippet saver to keep your tippet handy when the reel is stored, and a 3-way selector for drag alarm that seems like a thoughtful touch. I'd really like to hear from someone with a Logic Arbor.

Those look very comparable to the Tioga in terms of the fully-caged design, but with the one-way clutch upgrade and some of the nice features of the Fly Logic line of reels.
