I've never gone squidding (I guess its wrong to call it fishing) . . . but from what I've read, this year has been the all-time-great-squid-run-for-the-ages. From what I understand, the docks in Greenport are about the most well known spot, but apparently anywhere under the lights at night can be good. I hope to go to the east end this weekend and think that it would be a hoot and something totally different to go out, catch a bunch of squid and cook up some fresh calamari.

The East Hampton Star usually has an article around this time of year about night-time jigging for squid from the docks in Fort Pond Bay in Montauk. Here (http://archive.easthamptonstar.com/ehquery/20020509/out3.htm) is an example. I've never done it but it looks like fun. I did buy some local squid two weeks ago at Stewarts and experimented sauteeing them with garlic and oil. I liked it, but the rest of the family were a bit grossed out that I was eating bait.

They are great marinated with a little olive oil and thrown on the grill too.

Greenport railroad dock at night is the hot place to be. Folks bring their portable lights, the whole family, and the squid are flying into the coolers. At least one Orient charter boat is running squid trips.
