Took a left out of montauk inlet today as the water around the point was so dirty after the rain.I found some birds feeding off gardiners island above a shool of huge herring (they were not bluebacks,in fact they looked like bismark herrings found in the north sea, perfect for kippers or pickled with a glass of aquavit!).
Naturally we were soon into some big bass, some at 30ins weighed 15lb as they were gorged with bait.I did not see a single bluefish, the herring became a bit of a nuisance as we caught many.An unusual day for that location but terrific fishing.

Matt which area of the island did you find the birds/fish. I was tempted to head over there on Sunday but last minute i headed toward point instead, which had nothing going on between 4-6pm on sunday.

As for those herring you mention, i actually had a taste of them Monday afternoon around 6pm as there was a huge blitz off of town beach with tons of birds all along the shore (inlcuding gannets). I caught a few of those herring almost up to 24" long. They were biting an 1.5 oz deadly dick i was tossing for the bass. Overall, managed a couple of bass and lots of blues during the blitz. My biggest bass was around 32" off that beach.
