I will be spending some time at Grant' s Camp in ME this summer and would like to know about where to fish (maybe off the beaten path) and what flies to tie. I will be there the last week of July. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

grey wulffs (14, 16, 18)... black caddis (14, 16, 18)... hares ears (12, 14, 16)... damsel nymphs (12, 14, 16)... muddlers... leech patterns (woolies, seal buggers, rabbit strip...) AP Emergers (12, 14 unweighted so they sit in the film)... smelt patterns (especially if you plan to troll) streamers...

hexagenia, callibaetis, and caddis dominate the waters of maine.

generally that time of year will produce smaller hatches (14, 16, 18) and surface activity will be random at best... plan to be on the water at first light and be out past dusk... some of the best fishing for me occurs 20-40 minutes before dark, and i always have on a grey wulff... just seems to be my go to fly up there.

recent article in flyfishing & tying journal on Maine ponds (summer 2005)... might want to contact kennebec river outfitters or hit Bean's on the way up.

summer can be tough fishing, so a well stocked cooler and a lead line might be your best friend during the daytime.

good luck!

You have a lot of water to choose from at Grant's. Lakes, ponds and river. It all depends on water temps in late July. If you have never fished the area I suggest getting a guide for a few days. The folk's at Grant's can suggest some. I have been to Grant's 7-8 times and caught fish in new places. Enjoy the trip.
