I live in South Carolina and would like very much to try a fishing trip to either Conn, R.I., or Mass. I need some help on fishing charters, lic.registration and the times that the best fishing will be. Anyone with help on the questions please email me. Thanks and good fishing

You'll get a better response if you can provide a few more specifics: e.g., how long would you come for? Can you come anytime? Would you prefer to make the trip ASAP or wait for the best fishing? What methods of angling (fly, spin) do you prefer? Is there a particular species you want to target? Will the trip be mostly fishing, or is it a vacation where you need to keep the family happy too?

A few thoughts on some of your questions:

On which of the three states to target (MA, RI, CT)...Massachusetts, hands down. Best fishing, best level of access. RI is also good. In CT, they've sold away most of their water access.

On the need for a license...None of the New England states require a license.

On the seasons: A rough guide to the best months For stripers, May-Oct; for blues: June-Oct; for albies and bonito: August-Oct.

A good choice for place and time would be Martha's Vineyard or Cape Cod in September: all 4 species are present and feeding heavily; the weather is good; the summer crowds are gone; the off-season rates start to kick in.

Another option is the same two places in June. But don't expect albies or bones then -- they don't show up til mid-late July.

If you're planning on fishing Massachusetts, Boston Harbor is the place to be. You may check out my web site on Reel-Time or at:

I am a Flyfishing Charter Capt. fishing out of Niantic Ct. We have a super fishery for Striped Bass and Bluefish starting in a couple of weeks. There are some fish around now but things are spotty at best. The prime time for Stripers and Blues is really from about the early part of June on. Things will slow down during the dog days of summer but even then we can get some excellent days due to the fact that we get a good tidal flow which will keep the water temps down to a tolerable level. Around mid August the atlantic Bonito show but can be picky early on. False Albacore arrive in late August/early Sept and this is a fantastic wild time. We hold these fish until around mid Oct. this is Grand Slam time in southern New England, Striped Bass, False Albacore, Bluefish and Bonito.
We also have some excellent wading most of which is in the Watch Hill RI. area. Watch Hill and the southern RI beaches offers some of the best Wading in the entire N.E. Two great books you might want to check out are Flyrodding the coast by Ed Mitchell and Inshore Flyfishing by Lou Tabory and Flyfishing for Striped Bass also by Lou Tabory. [OK thats 3 great books]

I have a time share available at Seamist Resort in Mashpea, MA. It's located on Cape Cod in the middle of some of the greatest accesses to fishing you'd want. Look on the map and you'll see it's between Woods Hole and Hyannis, two major places to get in some charter fishing. Also close to the canal and the bay. All amenities are close by, and the resort offers indoor/outdoor pools, sauna, jaccuzzi, tennis, golf nearby, and more. It's an RCI and II resort. It has a single bedroom with full kitchen, 2 baths, and convertable couch for two more people. I'm asking $450 for the week of 6/9 to 6/16. You may reach me at USCGRIH@Worldnet.ATT.net
Good luck and good fishing.
