Headed out East of the BE yesterday... The intent was to look for tuna and do some bottom fishing. This was my first offshore trip this year. Seemed to keep getting blown out. Anyway the ride out of Plymouth was rather uneventful. A couple of whales in the middle of CCB. But nothing else there.

Shorthly after arriving at the Cod grounds (30 miles out) we dropped baits and landed a some Cod, couple haddock, wolf fish, cusk, pollack, and a few other varieties. The Coast Guard Cutter (Hammerhead) showed up and was boarding boats, and checking any of the comm. boats over the radio.

We then started in waves running 2-3 feet, traveling about 2 miles back, still well east of the bank my buddy yells STOP. He had never seen the tuna before but a large school was right next to us. He was rigged and ready to go. I haddn't rerigged since last week's bass fishing. He made 3-4 casts with no hits before mine was ready. First cast (of the season) 3 or 4 cranks of the handle and I'm on. The fish shot out across the surface 100+ yards along with the 50 yds I had cast, and was taking at a very rapid rate. Drag was set at 12 lb with a full spool. The Lure was a Braid Mack pattern tin type.

Then it happened. The 50 lb Fluro leader parted just above the lure. I was really disappointed, but the shool was still there. Retied another lure but then the fish sounded, not to be seen again.

There were no other boats around, not any in sight. Not to burn the spot but it was Well East/South East of the BE. Lots of bait around but only that one school of tuna.\

Will try again next week.

Hey John, that's the first step. At least you hooked up. Your buddy must have been physched just at the site of seeing them for the first time. Still takes a lot out of you when you lose one. I always try to have my rod ready and rety often during down time to make sure their are no errors on my part so that when you do hook up and something goes bad it's not do to timing or loose knot. I like to sharpen the hooks before leaving as well. Try to put as many odds in your favor as possible.
I'm kicking myself as were heading to NH Wed-sat for vacation, while the action is slow but hopefully picking up on the tuna front. I may try to get out Wed am, but if it happens it could make for a long ride up north.
Good luck.

BE is a buoy off of P-Town.

exactly what Salty mentioned. A good reference as a starting pt.

The BE Buoy is in the middle of Stellwagen Bank.
It is about 12 miles North of Race point. It has been
a reference point for a lot of activity. In the spring it's a good cod area. Late summer there's usually a a group of boats chasing tuna.

Bassbuster, I am normally well prepared, and have gear rigged before leaving the house. This time it was 1 buddy and myself. I was paying more attention to running the boat than getting gear ready. There was really plenty of time while cod fishing. I believed to have figured out why things went wrong. First not prepered. Second the drag was too loose to start then too tight. Measured 12 lbs with a the spool full. With half the line gone the drag would be double. (half the leverage). Third the fish was running straight away, I could feel the tail hitting the line. Thus abrading the leader with over 24 lbs of pull.

Live and learn. I picked up more jigs yesterday and plan another try tomorrow afternoon.

Good luck, I'm hoping to get out Wed am. Trying to alk my wife into whale watching/fishing trip before heading up north.
I've been tying direct to the lure, by passing a leader, not sure if it's making a difference or not (like to think so). The warm weather should help bringing in more and closer action.
Tightlines, keep the amera ready.

Leader is a very good idea, typically 5-6' of 50# flouro then direct tie to your jig, plug, lure whatever. When you feel that line snapping along the sides of the body and/or tail you'll be glad the 50# is at that end.
