Fished the race on Saturday..put in an extremely full day!! Launched from sandwich at 05:00 - got back to sandwich at 19:45...absolutely beat to death..final tally about 5 million blues raging from 4 - 13lbs. An absolute blast on the top water for two hours straight later in the day around 16:00. We managed four stripers on the day, nothing bigger than 27", but they made a nice surprise when you got them to the boat and could lip em. Went through 4 full packs of sluggos. Got the big ens close to the pots at the dropoffs next to the bath house on the west side. If anyone was out there on Sat you'll know what I was talking about...there were a couple of blitzes that had to be a few hundred yards long..absolutley amazing stuff. Had my first blue fish on the fly take my last bite guard....didn't feel like feeding them flies and depleting my stock so went back to the LT for the remainder of the day. Turned out to be a goergeous day on the water as I was expecting a sloppier environment with the NE blow..but all in all fantastic. Also took out a newbie to the salt and he came home a bonified veteran on the LT. Just another day at the race!! Great stuff!!

Fished the race sat for most of the day. the bass bite out there really slowed down the last couple of days, managed only 5 legals in about 6 hours near the point. Biggest fish was 36" smallest 28". There are more bluefish out there then anybody knows what to do with, Caught one blue must of been 18 pounds this thing was huge, thought it was a big bass the way it stayed down the entire fight, i dont know how it didn't bite through the leader as i was not using a wire leader. I did end up losing 6 spro jigs but that's the price that you pay.

Medbird- were you guys vertical jigging the blues on the Race at the drop off ? Heading out there on Thursday and am unfamiliar with the most productive fishing methods- had decent activity on surface fish and trolling accross the drops in the past ...

Greenboat are you looking to catch bass blues or both?

bass and blues but definitely some blues for shark baits. I fished earlier in the season just in from hatches harbor and had very good luck slow trolling a tube n worm over the edge..We also tossed sluggos to surface fish for awhile. Just curious what the "preferred" Race point tecqnique was (I don't have wire line rigs)..Do people three way eels off the edge or live bait (i assuem no due to the blues)...

At this point if you are looking for blues you can set up anywhere and pretty much throw anything and you should be into nonstop action. There have been some monster blues coming from around the corner of the race. The live bait thing is not really an option right now due to the amount of blues in the area. If your looking for bass go take a peak in some of the deeper water and troll a tube. Just watch out for all of the traps.

surfmaster is right...you shouldn't have any trouble catching the blues as they were pretty much everywhere. Around the pots is where we got the biggest fish. We did it by drifting from 30' to 120'. Just keep an eye out for the pots. We would use the 6" sluggos on 1/2 to 3/4 oz lead heads trying to follow the contor of the ledge with the occasional twitch or jig. The hope was to find a big bass sitting below the blues vaccuming up the scraps as the blues would feed. The best thing I find about the number of fish up there right now is you don't have to worry about over crowding with other boats. If it starts to get to congested with the traffic I would just move and find more fish..it made the expereince for the passengers a little bit better, it allowed us to drift through some schools that would feed on top, letting us do the top water stuff. I'll tell you what, it's a hoot watching a 10lb blue jump 2-3' in the air blowing up on a plug. That's really what capped off the day.
Well I would wish you luck but I don't think your gonna need it so I'll just wish you some great weather. I'm sure your gonna have a blast, I know I did.

Thanks guys. I will only be there for an afternoon in route to the BC/ BB bouy for a tuna troll on Friday but would like to get in on some light tackle blue action. Thanks for the advice.
