Anyone shed any light on Cuba for me ? I'm thinking of doing the 'all inclusive thing' in late Nov., early Dec. & would like to get some fishing in. I hear transportation can be an issue & as I like to explore on my own this is important. Looking specifically for DIY opportunities around resort areas if it's available so if anyone has first hand experience I'd like to hear it. Thanks.

hi there,

i have a little info, went on hols to baracoa, eastern cuba, january 2004. the very friendly locals were catching large pemit, tuna, 'cuda & small bonefish with live shrimp, fishing with handlines.

the river estuarys had tiny shoals of small bone fish up to half pound. they were netted by villagers on the flood tide, whilst targeting snapper and other more edible species.

the hotel castillo is a good place to stay in baracoa, only if you want to go fishing well off the beaten track, sorry i don't have the contacts

i think you can fly from havana to baracoa. i arrived at holguin, took a taxi to baracoa approx 90-120 mins. cost 100(usd) party of four.

for resorts, there are daily flights to the small island of cayo coco, that lies to the north of cuba.it has a 10 mile road causeway link to mainland cuba. here exists 8-10 miles of "flats"
thats as much as i know, i only fished the east.

i used usd's in cuba, i think that all changed this year..? best find out.

car hire is more of an experience, than expensive. only hire from a reputable company.
& keep an eagle eye on the fuel guage, as petrol is rationed & can be scarce, always carry spare.

be mega thorough on your vechicle inspection,
you will have a great time.

sorry can't be of any more help,

tightest of lines if you go.

If you are interested in fishing there, I know of a group who are going in May 2006. They will be catching and releasing bonefish, tarpon, baracuda and permit (if lucky). Visit the website of www.Avalons.net and let me know if you are interested. --127-3-

I believe Cuda are everywhere and easy fish to catch...kinda of like Pike. Bring the same sort of gear you would use for big bass or pike. Look for a place that has moped rentals. They are an ambushing kind of fish but I have caught then in areas with no structure. They seem to be everywhere and are hard to see. They like to chase and attack from behind. Best colours were silver and white. Best time to fish is with currents caused by tidal action. Cast to areas where there is a lot water movement. You may get some snapper too. It's good to walk and cast along the flats. Bring neophrene boots and nylon socks. Bring all your old spinning gear and give it away, ask your friends for there old gear too. They have nothing. Locals most often fish with just a hook and line.
