For one reason or another I've been stuck at home and haven't been fishing since July 16. I had planned to change that this weekend. Saturday I set the alarm for 0:dark:30 and woke up to a downpour. Stayed awake for a half hour more hoping it would let up but no joy. Went back to sleep.
Sunday woke up at the same time and this time no rain. Quickly loaded up the yak, got my coffee and went to Newburyport. Pulled into Joppa park and scanned the area only to see 1 boat about midchannel. OK, maybe everybody knows something I don't but I was Jonesing to fish so I launched. It was a perfect morning with no wind and the water was likea mirror. As soon as the bow broke the surface of the water I had bait spraying everywhere. A good sign. Started paddling along the grass line towards the wastetreatment plant and started casting into the grass. 2nd cast a little twink. Repeated this for another 1/2 hr or so.
I started seeing more surface activity as it got later. Nervous water amd small vees of cruising fish. Then around 5:30ish it broke open with fish popping, slurping and launching themselves into the air. This was happening from the corner by the treatment plant down past the boat ramp. No big fish but tons of schoolies.
What really made the morning a good one was having anticipated the size of the fish I had brought my 5 wt along and was using that exclusively. Most of the fish were between 12 & 15". I was using a sand eel imitation then switched to a small crease fly and when that wore out went to bigger crease fly. To teel the truth I don't think it mattered what you threw as long as it resembled some sort of bait and it wasn't too big.
I finally called it around 7:30 and headed for home.
All in all it was a great morning and a fantastic way to break the dryspell.

Now I have to get out and target the big ones.
