I headed out to Pavillion Sunday am. in the hopes of getting into some Blues and Bass. I found one but not the other. Launched during the last 2 hrs of the outgoing and started getting schoolies right away. A lot of surface action but nothing of any size. Worked my way upriver a bit then back down to the rocks and across the channel to the Plum Island side then over to Cranes. All small bass. The largest was a fat 24" fish on rubber.
While drifting along the rocks in there I heard something through the hull. It was like a moan whine very much like a seal only under water. Very hard to describe. It lasted for a good 10 seconds. I though I might be hung up on some rope and was causing it to vibrate but I couldn't see anything. It was eery but it never repeated .
I stayed until the 2nd hr of incoming but things slowed down for me and I decided to call it.
Went out last night on the incoming. Same place but with less luck. Nada nothing nil. Although I heard some chunkers whooping it up. All fly last night.

funny you mention the weird hull sound....i notice shorter odd sounds all the time; it still takes me a second to realize its the water against the hull.

had a bass collide into the hull one darkish morning a month ago. scared the both of us....i think i drifted onto it in shallow water while it was "dozing". i spooked a # of other bass that were seemingly doing the same that a.m...

I drifted through a huge fall bluefish blitz once just to see what it would be like. Very cool. Tons of fish hitting the hull and getting splashed.

I was at Pavillion (excellent sight fishing off sand bars at low tide BTW) this am-

As for the strange noises- I did hear the the same kind of noises eminating from beneath my kayak but I blame that on last nights dinner.

Yeah, that passed thru my mind as well. No Pun intended. It didn't sound like fish hitting the boat either. Just weird.

I've heard this sound at Pavillion as well and it took a while but figured it out. There are a lot of moorings in that area and when the tide is really running some of the balls get swept completely under water. I paddled back and forth to get close to the sound and found it was water rushing by one of the floats and setting up some strange harmonicwith the line or shackle or some other part. I've never heard it anywhere else though.
First time i heard it I started to tie on my humpback whale fly - the plankton special.
