Took my first trip in a kayak this AM. Had a ball... Got a sleigh ride cuortesy odf a 30" Bluefish. It became apparent quite quickly that my 9' surf rod with its long handle extension wasn't quite the ticket. What would people suggest that will throw up to 2.5 oz+ plugs and occasionally big tins?

Maybe a 7' muskie rod would be the answer if you want to toss 2.5+ oz.

I have a Shimano Compre rod that I use when I want to throw heavier plugs or jigs from the kayak. It's a real broomstick, but it does the job.

You could try a 7' st croix tidmaster with heavy action. Altouh, 2.5 oz may be a little heavy.

I use my St. Croix 7' 10 - 20# rating Tidemaster in my kayak. Works like a charm.

Ray, do you throw heavier plugs with the Tidemaster? It's rated for 1.5 oz., but if it can handle more I might consider getting one. The Compre I mentioned above can easily handle plugs to just under 3 oz. but is has zero sensitivity, not a whole lot of fun.

I've thrown 2oz Cripple Herrings with it, and wouldn't think twice about tying on the 3oz ones too. I've used it on Jacks and SBFT both in the 25 - 30# range with no thought of it breaking.

While I agree with Ray about the Tidemaster, love that rod and it will take a rediculous amount of abuse, but it is soft. You have to lob rather than hard cast stuff that heavy.

If you like St croix, take a look at the Premier (freshwater, not the heavy saltwater) rods, as mentioned above about the Muskie rods. They make a heavier action 20 lb class Premier that can handle that load. The premier saltwaters are heavy rods, there is a significant difference between the two. Heavier guides and eva grips are on the saltwater.

Baitshop boy advice: don't buy off the rack!

Butt length is really important when yak fishing--too long a butt section makes it difficult to handle. Any boat rod will be easier to use after doing the surf rod thing!
