Is anyone willing to spend an hour or so teaching me the proper way to cast! I just started this season and have intermediate equiptment, a 10 weight rod with decent WF intermediate line. I am struggling to teach myself but am determined! I have read 3 how to books but am only slightly improved... I usually fish the coles, Lees or Palmer but will travel throughout RI and SE MA for a freebie! P.S. I consider myself proficient with spinning gear, not a novice fisherman just a novice caster....

John,

You can get a freebie but, it will equate to the old saying
"You get what you pay for". And bad old habits die hard!

If you want the best Lefty is your man. I have heard very good things about George Roberts also. My .02

John,

If you can't get George Roberts buy his video, follow his lessons and take your time. I have been fly fishing for 30 years and I am having a hard time undoing some very bad habits.

George Roberts has some a fly casting seminar coming up on May 20th for beginners. I don't know if the class is full, but his tel number is 781-326-0676. It is fairly expensive ($195), but you get his video, 8 hours of teaching, lunch and only six students in the class. George and Sheila Hassan both instruct so you should be able to get good amounts of personal attention during the day. He and Sheila also have private sessions. Give him a call and tell him I suggested you call him. He is a friend of mine, but an incredible caster and a good teacher. I am taking a slightly different course myself the next day. And, don't hang yourself it cuts down the time on the water.

I'll be glad to spend a lunch hour on casting if you're anywhere near Waltham. E-mail me offline to synch up with my actual fishing schedule [which covers south shore and Cape locations].

Fly casting is not so difficult that you can't teach yourself. Most of the best casters I know are self-taught.

The freebie is yours for the asking. Just send me a note via e-mail and we'll set it up. I've brought a few friends and my brother into the flyfishing fold and they seem to be doing all right. You should know though that I've got my own bad habits and like ssully says you get what you pay for. I also agree with Michael Powers on the self taught issue. Casting is really not all that difficult and with time on the water I'm sure you will pick it up on your own.

I just had surgery and can't get out on the boat so I'd be happy to help you with your casting. I have a great beach on a pond next to my house in S. Plymouth. I'd love to get out and do some casting. Feel free to e-mail me. I'm shore bound for at least a few weeks, or so they tell me.
