Briant I have no idea why you feel the need to prove to me you are catching fish. I could care less what you catch at the narrow river or anywhere else. How many do you have this year? I have 267 fish since march 29th.

A 31 inch fish is not a big fish bud! Im glad you think it is.The problem is everyone says they got a keeper! But at 29 or 30 inches I do not aggree,Those are school bass. They are a blast to catch, but to put all that work into getting herring and hauling them out to the river mouth just isnt worth th e effort right now.A friend of mine fished charlestown tuesday night and said someone was there near where they park the trailers fishing with buckies,He said all that was chasing them was fish in the 26 inch bracket. It just isnt time yet for big bass!!

Yesterday I had 17 fish in matunuck,in less than an hour up to 30 inches on small bucktails. We should go back to 34inches for a "keeper".At 29 inches a fish is way to small to take home.I would be embaresed to go to a takle shop with a fish like that unless I was seriuosly going to take it home for a meal.

I think swimming herring for 30 inch fish is not nessasary when you can easily catch them on plugs now or jigs.

So again I say may 15th because I consider a decent fish to be around 18 or 20lbs and it just isnt worth it till then.

As for narrow river, I know all about the place, we have been getting fish there , at night off of river rock for most of the week. The only reason we didnd go last night was because the tide was just to late.I caught my first striper ever from narrow river in 1982.I have pulled 40pound fish from there. The soft side stinks! River rock is the place you want to fish and , the last two hours of the ebbing tide are when you want to do it!We used to be able to drive right along the beach to the inlet. That place isnt even a fraction as good as it used to be, not even close!! We used to liveline bunker in that inlet and get some nice fish.those days are long gone!!Now it has become a popular flyrod spot. And every tackle shop sends everyone and there brother there. The inlet has filled in to much and the big bass just dont go there like they used to.The only exception is in the late fall, november, we still do okay at that time, Back in 1991 my friend steve got two 40lb fish there on a skinplug on back to back casts!! That was around election day.

Two nights ago we had 40 fish there on the bottom of the outgoing tide From 12 midnight till arouind 2 am, on small yo-zuri plugs. Some of the fish pushed 32inches.The only reason I still go there on occasion is to escape the crowds and get some school bass at night. No one ever fishes river rock, because they cant get in there. So we usually have it to our selves.

Tonight Im going back to matunuck. If you want to talk fishing you can meet me there and I would be more than happy to discuss fishing with you.I will be there about 6pm.I cast conventional gear so, Im not hard to spot.

Im tierd of the cyber games,so this is my last post here,Id rather be fishing. The war of words doesnt get you anywhere.

The only one you need to please is yourself,if your catching fish ,all the power to ya!!Im glad your hookin up!
Come over to striped-bass.com and look at the 53 I caught last fall, Now thats a bass that can take a buckie!!!!!!!

Some friends and I were talking about what we consider a "big" or good fish,The general concences was a fish over 30lbs is a good fish. Its all relative,in freshwater a largemouth the weighs 3lbs is a good fish,Because stripers are a bigger fish the size is relative, anyfish over the 30lb mark makes the list as big.

In the mid to late 80s on block island we would catch fish all night long from the surf at southwest point and the small fish were 25lbs!! 30s were very common and everyone had multiple 40plus pound fish!!! I had a night once were I had 3 fish in the 40s!! on the islands south side!! We would get so tierd from carrying bass out of the snake hole that it took more time to do that than to catch them,But everyone was selling bass then and I dont feel bad about the past, it was common practice to fill a pallet with ten fish over 30lbs.Block island is the best surf fishing spot in the world for striped bass!! and those days for the huge cows are coming back!! I still fish there regularly in the summer and do well, just not as good as in the 80s.

So im sorry if I just dont share your enthusiasm about 30inch fish,I used to walk away from fish that small. But if thats all thats around then so be it! Matunuck is very easy to fish and there are a ton of fish there right now!! Come on down there and we can talk about big fish.

Lets keep it clean from here on out,no more cyber wars.I have a two year old to deal with noe, In fact I think she needs to get a custom rod soon!!

eelman,
thanks for all the input about the narrow river. I agree a 31" fish isn't a big fish. I just wanted to let you know that some of the posts you make are incorrect. You stated that there aren't any fish on the south coast big enough to swallow live herring and that there weren't any fish bigger than 20" at the west wall. Both are incorrect. Beleive me although I haven't caught a 40lb. fish like yourself I have caught pleanty of 30lbers. And to have caught many 40 lbers is incredible. Not many people can say that. My hat comes off to you.

Is this a Saltwater flyfishing site or a combo of both fly/spin?

Being new to the New England coast, a transplant from Michigan, I would be rather pleased to catch a 31inch fish or a number of schoolies that are considered "rats." It seems that one mans rat may make another mans day. I don't think that it's necessary to get into a ****ing contest about who's fished longer, or has more fish under his belt. I'm looking for places to go, techniques to use, things that will ultimately get me more fish.

I have always enjoyed catching fish, no mater what size, it's the fun being out there, not the number or size of the fish. I’m sure that you’re both very skilled anglers. I would rather get some info rather than a soap opera day after day. That’s my $.02.

I wondered about that myself -seems like its becoming fly only (can I use a Ray's fly as a teaser to enter the Salt water's edge contest?) I thought fishing was fishing, and many times was glad to give locations, etc. about my area to fly fishermen, but now I'm starting to wonder about the "exclusivity". Frankly I'd rather get some squeteague and fluke rather than bass less than 15 lbs, so maybe it's time to move on. Got 126 keepers last years (96% released), yet my biggest thrill was unexpectedly getting a 29" weakie.

I think that this debate is very entertaining.

For all of us who can't fish everyday, we can hear just how
good or bad it can be... 31" sounds good, 12" sounds almost as good. 12" herring on a hook sounds kind of weird, but good. (does an eel qualify as a fish on a hook?);

Fish finally showing up so that you all can let us know how great your skills are sounds especially good!!!

Save some fish for the rest on us...

grow up. Dont tell people not to be excited about their fish. No one likes a fishing elitest and you are one of the worst kind- i dont know how old you are but if you have opinions like that keep them to yourself because no one wants tohear them, except you. Get a life, if you really want to go fishing instead of writing dumb messages like that then you should be out on the rivers not in front of a computer writing letters that are far too long. Bragging got old in fourth grade buddy, learn the lessons and grow up.

I agree with Dave. critize a technigue if you want but not the person using it. Avoid specifically naming someone or repying to their post with you this or you that.

Give reports, ask questions, help if you can, we all have our preferences . If I report that I kept 100 keepers last year, it's ok so dicuss the values of catch and release an a simple statement Like " I could never use 100 keepers in a season wonder what could be done with that much fish? It's not proper to reply "Why are YOU being such an a>s>>>> keeping so many fish.

If you feel like being critical keep it general. "Too many of the people fishing the canal are pigs. They leave trash and rotton bait."

Sorry for the long post (for me that is) I'll get off my soap box. Obviously I am unable to fish this awesome weekend.

But Dave -

Didn't see the relevance between this discourse and your comment, but since you mention it - why do you think people decide to do so? 8)
