After countless trips out to the Newport Beaches within the last 3 weeks, last nights efforts made it all worth while. First fish of the season on the fly rod, and many more to boot. It should also be mentioned that most fish were a whopping 8 - 10 inches long, (very funny seeing these things put up a fight). I lost count after about 15 or so. Like clock work, as soon as the sun went down the action heated up. Solid action cast after cast for about 30 - 45 minutes. It seemed I was catching the same fish over and over because they were all the same size. Of course with the exception of the last two I mangaed to hook into. I knew right away when I hooked into an amazing 12 incher, WOW! But anyway the last fish of the night ended up being about 25 inches. As soon as I let him go. The action was over. Just like that gone. Try any of the beach fronts in Newport or Middletown and work the surf. Dress accordingly, you're gonna get wet.

I hit the lower part of Second Beach from 930-1030 pm fishing the ebb but the wind in the face was too much for my first time fishing in total darkness. I waded in above well above my knees. Water temperature always seems to get cooler the deeper I wade. Moved over to 3rd Beach where the water was calmer and stayed until 1115. Both places yeilded a bale full of weed. Hopefully I'll catch my first of the season tomorrow.

Mitch,
Try first beach in the corner of The Atlantic Beach Cafe. I park in the parking lot right behind the skate board park and walk to the end of the beach. I have found that this is much more appealing to fly fishing. Second beach seems to get packed with spin guys, and there isn't too much room behind you for a back cast with all the rocks at your back. Third Beach is good in the fall, but I haven't had to much luck there yet this spring. I was out Saturday night and only managed 4 very small fish at First Beach, but still it's a great place to cast a fly.
Good luck.
