Well, it is said that 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish. At the Rays Fly Tourney 6.25% of the fisherman caught 100% of the fish! Sixteen registered pairs fished hard but only two anglers hooked up. Mike Porco of Lincoln RI won the tourney with 10 bass (the largest was 24 inches) and all came from the corner of X Beach (that would be a mental note for participants only). As the First Place finisher Mike selected Kenny Abrames "Bay Fly Rod" (a 10'6" 7 wt). Peter Devine of Warren RI finished second. All other participants recieved a commplimentary Bass Ale and the other prizes were drawn from a hat.
In planning for next year I'm thinking of a couple of tweaks and I want your opinions.
1) The 7 to 7 timeframe while easy to remeber essentially eliminated low light conditions. My initial intent was to have the benefit of the sun on the water to warm up what could have been a chilly situation. SWE shore guides and others have been hammering fish at last light in the few days prior to the tourney. I think now I should have called an audible and allowed folks to fish until sunset. Also the long day seemed to eliminate folks who have to coach, carpool the kids and the like. Next time I'd propose 2 til sunset or noon to noon. What do you think ?
2) I'm thinking of including the rivers of the East Bay and Narragansett (maybe towns connected by bridge to Aquidneck Island) What do you think?
3) The Saltwater Edge/ Reel-Time are considering some other tourney ideas. would you be interested in "Hardtails for Hardcores" a shore tourney in the early fall and some sort of fall run/ slam tourney yet to be determined. Any other ideas?
Recap Suumary:
Good time had by all. Congratulation to Mike. I should have called the sunset audible.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Jenks
