Got on the water for the first time Saturday. Headed west from 3 mile harbor looking for warmer water and bait. Saw no bait looking at Nichols Point Shelter Island, none around Sag Harbor, but saw one small pod of sand eels at a flat in Peconic (just after seeing some cruising bass). Had a few good shots at bass on this flat, a few bass that turned to the fly, and my first hookup (on a chartruese half and half) and break off of the new millenium. Nothing big - maybe six pounds max.

Water temps ranged from 50 to 60 degrees in the area (with 60 in shallow, enclosed areas), but it looks like the bait needs to catch up with the rising water temps.

I fish the back of Peconic near the river and we have had a steady pick of small bass just before dusk. Action varies with small dark flies on the bottom to poppers.
By this time last year i had some good shots at weakfish but this year is different. No sign of weakfish yet.
