I figured I would ask this while there are still canal fishers lurking...
Anyone using a 2 piece conventional surf rod? I am a fan of the long rod and want to make a new shore fishing sluggo pitcher. The problem is the only blanks that I like are 2 piece. I have always stayed away from the 2 pc for fear of breakage.
Any comments?

Slappy,
I've used my Lami Arra XCRA1204 two-piece for the last three seasons without any problems. This rod is better suited to throwing 2oz pencil poppers than sluggos, so I'm putting that much more stress on it.
What reel are you going to use?

I have a couple of the arra's which are fine when throwing heavy stuff. They are heavy blanks though and not great for throwing the sluggs with 1/2 oz heads. I am leaning toward a loomis--faster rod, lighter blank for a reel, either an ambassadeur c5 or maybe I will get a shimano just to look cool. (Why can't they make a reel with magnets?)
Apparently not many 2 pc conventional users here...

A couple of years ago, I was scouting (but eventually passed on) a St Croix conventional casting stick for a Penn 525. I forget the name of the model but it had a carmel colored blank as well as red/black guide wraps. However, this rod was a heavier action rod.
For a rod capable of throwing something a little lighter and not seeming like such a broom stick, Take a look at the St Croix Premier series. This one comes with a very dark gray or black blank.
There's also a Fenwick rod which also has a dark blank with blue wraps.

I am planning on building one this year. 9' Loomis Blank rated up to 3oz temporarily with Abu 6500. I have only used levelwinds though for Conventional, don't mean to get off topic but whats the benefit of going without the levelwind.

Without the levelwind I can definitely throw it a lot further. I have an avet sx/10' ocean master combo that I really like.

I use a St Croix Tidemaster 3 piece for my light casting. It's only 7 ft but I can cast a mile with it. I've thought about getting a longer rod so I can really toss lures far, but the Tidemaster is so nice to cast I've never bothered.

I have a St. Croix 12' 2 piece that works best throwing a window sash and bait, haven't needed it yet. My experience is that the fish are in close and why throw over them.

I use the St Croix Premier 11' rated for 2-8 ozs.with a Shimano calcutta levelwind 700 B. The rod comes apart below all the guides, basically the grip section comes off. You'd never know it wasn't one peice in use.I've had a few big bait rods and its the finest.....no doubt.Real light, wicked powerful, and best of all extremely sensitive. I mostly sort of drift my bait with a lighter than usual sinker while holding the rod,and I swear you can feel bass look at the bait. Levelwind? My buddy gives me the hard hour, but I'm pretty sure I can throw a six ounce as far anybody else, and a little farther than he can.
