Planning trip to Ascension Bay this winter. Been there once before and had a blast with the 2-3 lb. bones. I have a couple of 8 wts that I will bring, but am thinking about getting a lighter rod for these small bones...maybe a 6 wt. I'd appreciate any insights from folks as to what the right rod weight would be...light enough to have fun, but not too light to get the fish in. (Not looking for advice on rods brands, just weight.) Thanks.

6-weight is perfect for bones up to about 7 lbs.

since you have a couple of 8wgts my choice would be a 5wgt. more versatility. spring schoolies on 5wgt = fun. A fast action + med sink tip. also you would have a good all-around fresh water rod. just my idea. I tend to under gun equipment. lt wgt lets me appreciate the power of a fish.

A saltwater 6 or 7 would be perfect as long as you have a good reel.

Keep in mind the rod weight should match the conditions (wind) not neccesarily the size of the fish. If you can cast a 6/7 long and accurately in a 15+ mph wind you will be deadly. Not everyone can do this.

Don't forget your 9 or 10 for permit.
