I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has fished at the following lodges and is willing to share their experience (e.g., quality of fishing and guides, would you return):

Ascencion Bay: Pesca Maya, Ascencion Bay Bonefish Club

Belize: El Pescador - Ambergis

Many thanks.

dude, didn't that whole area just get beaten up pretty good from Wilma?? Isnt this all pretty near Cancun? You might want want to be very careful and think about the Bahamas this year.

Belize did not get hit hard by Wilma.

El Pescador has a great lodge/food/staff. Open bar is a plus. The fishing will depend on what time of year you go. Ambergris is a fun place - you can walk up and down the beach and visit the bars of the various resorts.

Be forewarned there's not much wading on the soft bottom around Ambergris. Only a problem if: a.) you like wading or b.) there's enough wind to stir it up.

There are a couple of places you can DIY within walking distance of the lodge, which is a plus.

I have not fished A Bay but it's on the list for Permit. I would go back to EP for mig. tarpon but not for bones.

JGH,

I have been to Pesca Maya several times but not to any of the others you mentioned.

Pesca Maya and Ascension Bay was hit by Wilma as said in an earlier posts. Last word I heard today is that the lodge lost the 4 front cabanas which they are already starting to rebuild them. Also the main palapa received some damage, this too is being repaired. They expected to reopen by Monday, have 10 cabanas and fully operating by Jan./Feb.

Great food, guides, nice cabana's with hot showers , all situated in the perfect bonefish lodge setting. It's all inclusive including your shuttle and drinks.

Ascension Bay is an incredible fishery. I don't know what the hurricane did to the fishery but have always heard it ends up helping the ecosystem out in the long run. I'm thinking it will bounce back just as good as it was if not better than it was before the hurricane.

Be happy to answer any specific questions that you might have.

Regards,

Tim

All good places- but it really depends on what you are looking for fish wise (permit, bones or tarpon), and extra activities. For a group of guys or vacation with the wife should all play into decision. Time of year is important as anything on the "east coast" is iffy to early in the winter- WIND.

Mexico has some great new outfitters and fisheries for small tarpon-great prices, looking at 15-25 shots a day, some days many more....

PM me if you want further info...
