I was in Punta Cana this April past, Bavaro beach I think was the name of the beach? And I spent a few happy hours in the surf fishing.
It's the second time I have been to the same place, tends to be quite windy most of the time and heavy surf as well.
Any how all I took was a combination fly/spin rod, I caught a variety of fish including 4 small bones, lots of Pompano/palometa, some kind of small surface feeding garfish?, blue tangs and other various unnamed critters.
The pompano hang right in the surf and are a blast to catch putting up a great fight on light gear. I tried the fly but really I did not have the right kind with me and I had a hard time with the wind. I caught most of the fish on believe it or not bread, just steal a bag of bread rolls from the resort and throw out handfuls to attract what ever is around, then just put a pinch of bread on a small hook with a bobber/float and have fun.
There are locals that will take you out as one fellow did and he caught a couple of Dolphin fish/Mai mai and some jacks. I did not really see any so called flats that were within walking distance but I am sure they must exist there; again maybe a local could help. But as I said I did catch a few bonefish, small but hey now I’m hooked on taking a special trip for them.
Hope this helps, feel free to email me if I can help further.
Have a great trip!
