I've been tagging fish for over 15 years now, and I figured I'd try a thread on this subject. To me it's an extra demension to fishing. It's like putting a message in a bottle. I've tagged close to 2,000 fish--stripers,blues,fluke,blackfish&seabass. I have close to 100 returns, so it is about a 5% return ratio. It proves catch & release works. One cool return I had was. I tagged a 16" striper in East River NYC, it was caught 16 days later in Rhode Island!!! I tag for the American Littorral Society, if anybody wants any information on this subject, please just ask. You can check the ALS out at >> http://www.alsnyc.org/

Luv2Fish - my father and i actually do a good bit of tagging bass on our boat, all out of Montauk. We dont tag every bass we catch as sometimes conditions arent the greatest to take the time out to tag, but we do as much as we can. And yes, our tags are also thru the Amercian Lit Society. As of yet, we havent heard of any returned tags of ours. Im sure it must be cool when and if we dont get some feedback one day. Hopefully, the herring will be thick at the point and major tagging will happen!!!! --127-3-

I have had two fish this tear with littoral tags.both tags were stuck through the middle of the fish in front of the tail.one fish was dragging a huge growth of small mussels the size of a fist, attached to the tag.both fish had large wounds on each side of its body.I was happy to relieve these young fish of their burdens.while i agree that tagging is a great source of info,i hate to see fish in this condition.matt

Not only do I tag alot, but I have caught over 50 tagged fish myself. Even my own tags. Hardly ever do I get much growth on the tags, and only once in a while do I see sore wounds at place of insertion. If anyone else has seen growth ( besides algea ) or sore wonds at place of tags, please respond and let me know. Thanks Mark.
