Well I have returned from my fishing trip from Belize where I stayed at El Pescador. I had a really great trip, met some great people and really enjoyed my stay. The lodge in my humble opinion was awesome, great food and staff. They really cater to the fishing crowd but my wife enjoyed her stay as well.

I fished 6 days in total and according to some of the guests that are regulars the fishing was just ok. Weather was pretty good but we had some days with cloud cover which would clear on occassion. First day I fished for Bones in the National Park landed 5 but should have landed quite a few more. I had trouble seeing the fish and my casting was not really right on target. Next day I went for Tarpon near the mainland and saw quite a few fish maybe 20 in total. Of that I probably had a shot at 5 fish but I never hooked up. did see a school of Jacks blast by while I was finishing my lunch. Day 3 I headed to the same spot and hooked my first Tarpon probably around 15lbs, jumped about 3 times and I had him close to the boat when I tried to turn him back he shook me off right next to the bow. Day 4 I saw a couple Tarpon but didn't get any shots. On the 5th day went back up to the Park and landed about 7 bonefish, biggest about 3lbs, saw 1 really big bone looked to be about 5 -6 lbs. Went over to another Cay in the afternoon and saw 1 Tarpon and a nice school of Permit that seemed to all be in the 15lb range, couple shots but wouldn't take. Day 6 was tough, weather wouldn't cooperate, real cloudy, around 1:00 we hit some deep water that we had fished previously and had seen a couple fish. Tomas my guide saw a fish poirpose (?) so we anchored up, saw another fish break about 150 yrds away, we moved closer and every once in a while we would see a fish break. He suggested I blind cast cause we definately had fish around. I started blind casting and after about 15 minutes my line went tight, hard, and a Tarpon of about 40lbs lept through the air, when he landed I set the hook hard again and fish came up again, line had a little slack cause he had run closer to the boat and on his third leep he threw the fly. My guide laughed at me cause me knees were shaking with excitement. I continued blind casting and again line went tight and the fish exploded, looked to be around 60lbs, again I pulled hard to set the hook and could feel the line stretch as I tried to make sure the hook was in tight. Jumped again and I bowed to the King. Fish dove and made a hard run getting pretty deep into my backing, 50 yds when the hook came loose again s **** t. Checked the leader and started casting again, saw a good size Tarpon turn on the fly but no take. My times running out only half hour left till back to docks but the fish were still around. Kept casting to dark spots, reefs and turtle grass bottums when again the line goes tight and a fish of about 25 lbs leaps again, this fish makes three jumps and throws the fly even when I kept the rod tip down. Time to go. So goes the trip, 12 bones landed and 4 tapon hooked and lost. Guide was fun Tomas Paz. Met some great people who fish the world, lots of great stories, not a lot of Tarpon landed when I was there, 1 gentlemen, George that has been going there for 20 years and was fishing with Nesto for 10 days laned 1 on his first day of around 100 lbs but that was pretty much it for landed Tarpon in our group. Of course the week we were there we only had about 7 or 8 people fishing everyday. I would recommed the lodge and fishing it was an awesome experience.

I'm going down to El Pescador myself on June 1st. It'll be my first time out there, so do you have any suggestions about effective flies?

For bones I fished with Gotchas and Crazy Charlies, pink and tan and for Tarpon my guide and most there seemed to favor Black Death. One of the regulars told me next time to tie my Black Deaths on Circle Hooks. He liked the Octopus hooks by Gamagatzu. He flet you may not hook up as often but when you do they stay on more. For permit I used a Heavy weighted Merkins Crab but most of the people I spoke with said they used more style bonefish flys than crab patterns. They didn't think there were many crabs on teh flats ? I can't say for sure because I never hooked any.

June is the best time of the year to be there. Weather, big tarpon, plentiful bones. So no excuses Spexnreds. Light brown gotchas have always worked for me. Bring an assortment of colors, weighted and unweighted. Same with tarpon flies. I've had success with orange and blue feathers. The best and most important advice I can give you is to request Sinoe as your guide. You will catch fish.

I got to fish with both Nesto and Sinoe when I went to EP and they are both great. I did well with flies that had rubber legs for bones and white deceivers for tarpon. Never saw a permit.

I have Gilberto as my guide.....I talked to Jim Klug over at Yellow Dog and he said Gilberto was a young guy and the best one for us college students-I've heard great things about the others, but Jim said Gilberto would put us on the fish and that he's alot of fun
