What a weekend.
Freezing cold on saturday gave way to great fishing. Loads of birds and bass working the North Shore of Long Island. Huntington, Cold Spring, Bayville, and Hempstead had terrific action with Bass to 26" (many smaller bass). Blues to 10lbs were mixed in sporadically. Most of the fish were hooked on Red and white 1/2 and 1/2's or flasher ceivers. CT coastline was also very good. While traveling along I95 on Sunday birds could be seen working over pods of fish from Fairfield to Groton. Pennfield Reef, Norwalk Islands, Darien, and Greenwich all had great surface action. With the cold weather and clear skies this was just what I needed. Lost count of the bass hooked. While on my way to Mohegan Sun (taking my sons to see Bull Riding) we stopped to fish the Norwalk River. The trout were happily sippling BWO. My 3 boys and I hooked 2 browns to 14" while fishing a section of river in Wilton.
Attached is a cool blitz photo.

I got a real late start Saturday. Launched from Port Jeff around 10:30 AM and headed West. Waaaaaay West. Didn't see ANYTHING right up to Cold Spring. Found some Birds working and picked up a few dinks (20" or so). Headed West some more, no love. (must have missed the bite). Shot over to Norwalk, still nothing much.
Decided to head home. Crossing by Crane Neck I spot a HUGE cloud of birds working the beach off Old Field. It looked like a Hitchcock movie. Had to be a 1/4 mile of solid birds with fish under them. Mostly bass (23-25" or so) with some nice blues to eight pounds mixed in. Followed the flock to Nissequogue then called it a day (night).

So, put 30-40 miles on the boat to find insane fishing 10 minutes from home.

worth the frostbite

--126-3- Monday morning was terrific on the North Shore. The ussual spots were not producing any results at sunup (6am) ran around looking for activity. Birds arrived in force at about 7am and the rest of the morning was spent hooking 15-24" bass. No Blues, only bass. Too many to count. Action was great and everyone had a blast.
The afternoon started out to be the same but after about an hour in the same spot the birds took a break. Averything went quiet. Ran around to some far western locations and found the Mother load deep within a far west harbor. Herring and Bass. Herring averaged 8-10". Large flies (10 flashy ceivers) were working very well. Sinking lines worked better to get down to the bigger fish. No big bass hooked several bass near 30" landed. Was hoping for monsters. The attached photo was taken with my phone and is the only photos I can post now. Will post some photos taken with my digital camera of the bass with distended bellys packed with herring lunch tonight

Mark,
Thanks for the correction.

Its very good to see the big baits in place. This is sure to ignite the action this week.
