I'm a student at USC and I don't like being here in California too much, just too different from home-no one likes to hunt or fish here! But I got one more semester here, and I haven't managed to get a line out since I've come up. I want to make it more enjoyable, so in January I'm bringin up my 8wt to hit the beaches for some corbina-does anyone know any good beach areas to fish in the LA area?

Spex,
Here is a link to the best fly shop in CA ( just south of LA )http://bobmarriotts.net/

I used to travel on business to the LA area and searched out Bob's shop. Lots of knowledgeable fly fishers with some local waters that would surprise you.

For fresh water; Peyro Creek just north of LA. Beautiful little rainbows on a 2 WT, average fish is only 6" long. Lots of fun and not easy catch because of the local pressure. I took a 13" fish that was considered a trophy for that area.

There is another shop in the valley that now escapes me. Look in the local yellow pages for fly shops and ask some questions.

I lived in Marina del Rey for a few years, and the easiest thing to do is rent a small skiff in Redondo Beach. There is decent Bonito fishing in the harbor. It's touch to keep the seals off your fish though.

good luck.

hi. i fully understand your predicament; i lived there on and off for 4 years. i hated it, especially the lack of fishing. that said, all of the beaches from anywhere near l.a. can be really good (north and south). problem is,you will either catch lots of small fish (surf perch, yellow fin croakers, small halibut), or big, slow fish (leopard sharks, guitar fish, shovelnose). there are also corbina, in springtime mostly. and sometimes stripers, white sea bass, mackeral, and albies, but not usually... i always used a lot of orange and pinkish colored flies, sinking lines, an 8 weight will be fine. the best boards there are www.garybulla.com and www.danblanton.com i made a lot of good friends on the beach there, no doubt you will run across them. they are really nice, and usually really helpful. good luck.
