I had non-fishing commitments over the weekend, but got home sunday nite and saw that the weather forecast looked good for today with light winds, chance of rain not appearing till late afternoon and that its going totally downhill from tonite till at least past thanksgiving. So, sensing a last chance, I played hookey and headed east.
Got out in boat around 10ish. Winds and seas were somewhat higher than forecast. Montauk was totally dead like January -- very few boats out. Ran down the south side to the village and saw nothing. Would have gone further, but again the wind was blowing around 15, there was some swell and chop, etc. and with a coming noreaster, I had visions of it just getting worse and didnt want to get caught by myself miles from home (especially since there were literally no other boats in the vicinity).
Drove around alot without seeing any working birds or signs of life. Waited it out till the tide changed. Still nothing developing on the outgoing. Dredged a blue on a diamond jig out in the rips. Finally, called it a day (and probably a season on the boat) early.
On my car ride back in, pulled up to a few beaches. Finally saw birds tight to shore to the west of Indian Wells. Drove down to the next beach, Two Mile Hollow, where I met up with the fish and quickly caught a few twinkie bass until they moved off the beach. Had the fish to myself, but later ran into someone who said they had been up and down the beach between East Hampton and Amagansett all day and that there were a bunch of folks on them (including a few fly boats).
Kind of a disappointing day, especially compared to what the action was like this same time last year, but it was kind of fun to be on the ocean beach and seeing these little bass come right up into the wash.
Will we get a herring run? I'm not too optimistic. There does not seem to be many bass around montauk right now. There were hardly any of the big charter boats fishing for them out in the rips. Most of em seem to be blackfishing.
