I have in the past used Zap-a-Gap to coat my line to leader and backing to line knots to provide as smooth a transition as possible. I've had occasions where the Zap-a-Gap dispenser tube doesn't seal well, and dries out. Zap-a-Gap is relatively expensive for only getting a few uses out of a tube.

Are there suggestions for other cements to use that do not damage the lines, are readily available, relatively inexpensive, seal well, and are small to carry?

I've heard that Pliobond works well, but what I've found so far comes in a relatively large tube. How about super glue or some of the similar gel cements?

Loon makes a product called Knot Sense and another version called UV Knot Sense. The UV version cures almost instantaneously in good light. The normal dries in about 20 minutes and I use it for my more permanent connections. Much better than CA or Superglue in my opinion since it is somewhat pliable like Pliobond and therefore won't create a hinge/flex point that will break over time.

I'm still using Pliobond (since the mid seventies..) and it's worked fine. I consider it a "shop glue" and wouldn't bring it on the water since it does take a while to set up properly. I particularly like the way it skins over, but can still be shaped by rolling it between thumb and forefinger so that it will pass though the guides perfectly. I also use the stuff on the backing to line loops. Once cured it won't stick to anything... If I have to create a new butt section on the water I just use it without any coating until I can do it properly in my shop later. Hope this helps.
