Not for flyrods though!

Tarred nylon seiners twine is a good alternative to cork tape or hypalon when building a custom saltwater rod. The cost of your handle is less than $1 a rod and it lasts a long time. (I have rods that have had the same cord for 15 years). It is very easy to install, wrap it on just like thread and cover the end with a turks head.

This stuff is made for your slime rod--bait, bluefish or kayak. Any time you want a solid grip on a rod. It doesn't get slippery when wet. It is light, so it doesn't add the weight that hypalon does. It also looks better after a few years as the tar fades from black to greyish black.

The drawbacks to it are that some people think that it is hard on the hands and your first couple trips it turns the hands black.

I just found out that duck hunters use the stuff for their decoys--even cabelas sells it. Size 60 is good for most saltwater rods.
